How much do you know about ultrapure water machines used in university laboratories?
Date: 2025-07-18Read: 0
In the research and teaching environment of universities, laboratories play a crucial role, and the ultra pure water machine used in university laboratories is one of the key equipment to ensure the smooth progress of numerous experiments.
Ultra pure water, as the name suggests, refers to water with high purity, and its impurity content is strictly controlled at a low level. In university laboratories, many experiments have strict requirements for water quality. For example, in chemical analysis experiments, even trace amounts of impurity ions may interfere with the accuracy of experimental results. Like trace element analysis, if even a small amount of metal ions are present in water, the analysis results may deviate and cannot truly reflect the trace element content in the sample. For example, in biological experiments, cell culture requires ultrapure water to prepare the culture medium, as impurities such as microorganisms and organic matter in ordinary water may affect cell growth and metabolism, and even lead to cell death, rendering the previous experiments useless.
Ultra pure water machine for university laboratoriesThe working principle involves multiple complex technologies. It usually goes through a pre-treatment system to remove larger particle impurities, residual chlorine, and other contaminants from the water. This process is like laying the foundation for subsequent deep purification, removing impurities in the water that are easy to treat but may affect subsequent processes. Next, reverse osmosis technology will be used to utilize the characteristics of semi permeable membranes to allow water molecules to pass through under pressure, while the vast majority of impurities such as salts and organic compounds are intercepted. This step can significantly improve the purity of water. However, the water obtained at this time cannot meet the needs of some high-precision experiments in university laboratories. Therefore, ion exchange resin columns and other precision treatment processes will be equipped to further remove a small amount of residual ions in the water, ensuring that the produced water meets the standard of ultrapure water.
From the perspective of application scenarios, in the field of materials science, ultrapure water is used for material cleaning and preparation. For example, in the manufacturing process of semiconductor materials, even tiny impurities adhering to the surface of the material can alter its properties. Ultra pure water can effectively ensure the purity of the material. In medical research, drug synthesis experiments require ultrapure water as a solvent to ensure that the synthesized drug components are accurate and not affected by impurities in the water. For environmental science majors, when analyzing pollutants in water and soil samples, ultrapure water is used to prepare standard solutions and blank controls. Only in this way can the pollutants and their contents in the samples be accurately measured.
The maintenance of ultra pure water machines used in university laboratories is also quite particular. Regular replacement of pre-treatment filters is essential because these filters gradually adsorb a large amount of impurities during use. Once saturated, they not only fail to perform their filtering function, but may also become a breeding ground for bacteria, thereby polluting the entire waterway. For reverse osmosis membranes, to prevent them from being eroded by microorganisms and chemically damaged, they need to be cleaned and maintained according to the prescribed cycle. Meanwhile, after working for a period of time, the exchange capacity of the ion exchange resin column will decrease. Timely regeneration or replacement is necessary to ensure continuous and stable supply of ultrapure water.
Its use is not simply about turning on the faucet to fetch water. Operators need to undergo certain training to understand the specific requirements of different experiments for water quality and choose the appropriate operating mode of the equipment. Some experiments may only require ultrapure water with a certain electrical resistivity, while others have almost strict standards for the microbial and organic content in the water, which requires operators to flexibly adjust the parameter settings of the ultrapure water machine according to experimental needs.
Although the ultra pure water machine used in university laboratories may seem like just a water production equipment, it is closely related to the success or failure of numerous subject experiments in universities. It is the silent guardian behind the smooth development of scientific research and teaching in universities, and its importance cannot be underestimated.
