The normal range of soil cation exchange capacity: the "core ruler" for measuring soil fertility
Date: 2025-10-20Read: 1
  The cation exchange capacity of soil is a key indicator for evaluating soil fertility and environmental protection capacity, and its value directly reflects the ability of soil to preserve and supply nutrients.Understanding the normal range of this indicator is of fundamental significance for scientific fertilization, sustainable land use, and pollution remediation.
  1、 The concept and connotation of CEC
Cation exchange capacity refers to the total amount of various cations that soil colloids can adsorb, expressed in moles per kilogram of soil. This indicator comprehensively reflects the soil's fertility, buffering capacity, and anti pollution ability. The numerical value mainly depends on core factors such as soil clay content, organic matter level, and mineral composition.
  2、 Normal range for different soil types
There are significant types of differences in soil CEC values, which can be mainly divided into three typical intervals:
1. Low CEC soil (<10cmol (+)/kg): mainly occurs in sandy soil and soil with poor organic matter. This type of soil has weak nutrient retention capacity and requires small amounts of multiple fertilizations, but it has the characteristic of being easy to improve. Typical representatives include red soil and alluvial sand in southern China.
2. Medium CEC soil (10-20 mmol (+)/kg): commonly found in most agricultural soils, including loam and some clay. This type of soil has good ability to retain and supply nutrients, making it an ideal soil for cultivation. The tidal soil in the North China Plain is a typical representative.
3. High CEC soil (>20cmol (+)/kg): It should be distributed in soils rich in clay and organic matter, such as black soil and peat soil. Although it has strong nutrient retention ability, there may be issues with nutrient fixation, and special attention should be paid to regulating the effectiveness of nutrients.
  3、 Natural factors affecting the scope of influence
The parent material determines the mineral type of the soil, and the CEC of 2:1 clay minerals (such as montmorillonite) is significantly higher than that of 1:1 minerals (such as kaolinite). For every 1% increase in soil organic matter, CEC can increase by 2-5 cmol (+)/kg. The pH value significantly regulates CEC by affecting the variable charge amount.
  4、 The significance in agricultural practice
In agricultural production, the CEC value directly affects fertilization strategies:
1. Low CEC soil should be fertilized in small amounts multiple times;
2. Soil with high CEC can reduce the frequency of fertilization appropriately;
3. Soil improvement should prioritize increasing organic matter content.
  5、 Environmental warning for outliers
When the CEC value significantly exceeds the normal range, it may indicate:
1. Low value: risk of soil degradation and nutrient loss;
2. High values: may be affected by pollutants such as heavy metals.
These abnormal situations require corresponding management measures to be taken.

Conclusion
The normal range of soil cation exchange capacity provides a quantitative basis for scientific evaluation of soil quality. This indicator is not only related to agricultural production efficiency, but also an important foundation for achieving sustainable agricultural development. Through scientific understanding and rational utilization of this' soil fertility scale ', we can better promote precision agriculture practices and promote the sustainable use of land resources.
