The Core of Digital Temperature and Humidity Meter: Capacitive Humidity Sensor and Thermistor Unveiled
Date: 2025-09-11Read: 1
The digital temperature and humidity meter integrates a capacitive humidity sensor and a thermistor to achieve accurate measurement of environmental temperature and humidity. Its core principle and structure are as follows:
Capacitive humidity sensor: the "sensitive antenna" for humidity measurement
Structure and Principle
A capacitor is composed of two parallel electrodes (metal or conductive material) and a humidity sensitive medium (such as polymer film or ceramic) in the middle. When the environmental humidity changes, the sensitive medium absorbs or releases water molecules, causing a change in its dielectric constant, which in turn changes the capacitance value. For example, when the humidity increases, the dielectric constant of the medium increases after absorbing water, and the capacitance value increases accordingly.
technical advantage
High precision and linearity: The capacitance value is approximately linearly related to humidity, and the measurement error can be controlled within ± 2% RH.
Quick response: The response time is usually less than 5 seconds, suitable for dynamic environmental monitoring.
Long term stability: Sensors made of anti pollution materials (such as fluorinated polymers) can have a lifespan of over 5 years.
Typical Applications
Widely used in meteorological stations, agricultural greenhouses, industrial warehouses, and other scenarios, such as monitoring the humidity of grain storage environments to prevent mold growth.
Thermistor: A Precise Scale for Temperature Measurement
Structure and Principle
Using semiconductor ceramic materials (such as manganese, nickel, cobalt oxides) as the core, temperature measurement is achieved through the characteristic of resistance value changing with temperature. Among them, NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor is the most common, and its resistance value significantly decreases with increasing temperature. For example, an NTC thermistor with a resistance of 10k Ω at 25 ℃ may drop to 2k Ω at 50 ℃.
technical advantage
High sensitivity: The temperature coefficient can reach -3%~-5%/℃, and can detect small changes of 0.01 ℃.
Low cost and miniaturization: small size, low price, suitable for integration into portable devices.
Wide measurement range: can cover temperatures from -50 ℃ to 150 ℃, meeting most industrial and civilian needs.
Typical Applications
Used for smart homes (such as air conditioning, humidifier temperature control), medical equipment (such as operating room temperature control systems), and automotive electronics (such as battery pack thermal management).
Collaborative work: from physical signals to digital displays
signal conversion
Capacitive humidity sensors and thermistors convert changes in humidity and temperature into changes in capacitance and resistance values, respectively.
Microprocessor processing
The built-in microprocessor converts the capacitance and resistance values into corresponding humidity and temperature values through table lookup or formula calculation. For example, high-precision temperature calculation can be achieved through the Steinhart Hart equation of NTC thermistor.
digital output
The processed data is presented in digital form through LCD or LED displays, and some models also support data storage, alarm threshold setting, and wireless transmission functions.
Technological Evolution and Future Trends
With the development of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) technology, capacitive humidity sensors and thermistors are evolving towards miniaturization and integration. For example, integrating the humidity sensitive layer and temperature sensing element onto the same chip can significantly reduce device size and cost. At the same time, temperature and humidity meters combined with AI algorithms can achieve environmental trend prediction and automatic regulation, providing key data support for Industry 4.0 and smart cities.
