Solution for detecting alkylmercury in water quality using liquid phase atomic fluorescence spectrometry
Date: 2025-07-18Read: 0
Alkyl mercury (methylmercury, ethylmercury) is a class of highly toxic and carcinogenic organic metal compounds. These compounds have strong lipid solubility and are prone to residue in the adipose tissue of organisms in natural water bodies. They accumulate in the food chain of water bodies and pose serious hazards to humans and animals living in aquatic and wetland ecosystems.

Since the 1970s, poisoning incidents caused by alkylmercury have occurred frequently, and alkylmercury pollutants have attracted high attention. Governments of various countries prioritize alkylmercury compounds when formulating their own environmental laws, regulations, and standards.

The various environmental standards issued by the State Environmental Protection Administration of China also include this type of compound, and it is currently regarded as an important indicator for environmental monitoring. The methods for measuring and studying alkylmercury have important application value for reducing pollution and protecting the ecological environment.

Advantages of liquid chromatography atomic fluorescence method for detecting alkylmercury

Atomic fluorescence has independent intellectual property rights in China. The standards for the determination of alkylmercury that have been issued in China include: "Determination of total mercury and organic mercury in food" (GB 5009.17-2014), "Determination of inorganic arsenic, methylmercury, and ethylmercury in exported products by liquid chromatography atomic fluorescence spectrometry" (SN/T 3034-2011), "Atomic fluorescence spectrometry for the speciation analysis of arsenic and mercury in bee products" (NY/T 2822-2015), etc., which have a very wide and mature application basis.

Due to the trace concentration of alkylmercury in water, early gas chromatography methods in China had low sensitivity and poor reproducibility in determining alkylmercury in water. The newly issued "Determination of Alkyl Mercury in Water Quality by Blow Sweep Capture/Cold Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy" (HJ 977-2018) has high sensitivity, but the instrument is expensive and has poor universality. The liquid chromatography atomic fluorescence method for determining alkylmercury has high sensitivity and good reproducibility. Therefore, the development of the new standard is of great significance for controlling alkylmercury pollution, leveraging China's instrument advantages, and protecting the environment and safeguarding people's health.

Jitian Instrument has been committed to the development of liquid phase atomic fluorescence detection methods, actively participating in standard setting and contributing to the popularization of atomic fluorescence detection methods.
