Unveiling the Secrets of Transparent Coating Thickness Gauge: Electromagnetic Induction Method and Ultrasonic Method
Date: 2025-06-11Read: 3

Accurate measurement of coating thickness is crucial in modern industrial production and quality control. As a key tool in this field, the core technology of the through coating thickness gauge is mainly based on electromagnetic induction method and ultrasonic method. This article will delve into the principles, application scenarios, advantages and disadvantages of these two measurement methods, helping readers to fully understand the mysteries of transparent coating thickness measurement technology.

1、 Principle of thickness measurement using electromagnetic induction method
The electromagnetic induction method for thickness measurement is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, which determines the thickness of coatings by measuring changes in the electromagnetic field. When the probe of the thickness gauge is close to the metal substrate, the coil in the probe generates an alternating electromagnetic field, which induces eddy currents in the metal substrate. Different coating thicknesses can cause changes in eddy current intensity, thereby altering the impedance of the coil. The instrument accurately measures this impedance change and calculates the coating thickness value through complex algorithms.
The electromagnetic induction method is particularly suitable for measuring the thickness of non-magnetic coatings on magnetic substrates, such as paint, plastic, rubber, and other coatings on steel substrates. This method has a fast measurement speed, usually taking only a few seconds to obtain results, and does not require high requirements for the coating surface. Even with a certain roughness, it can accurately measure. However, this method is sensitive to the conductivity and magnetic properties of the substrate material, and different metal substrates require different calibration curves.
2、 Principle of Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement
Ultrasonic thickness measurement technology is based on the characteristics of sound waves propagating in different media. The piezoelectric crystal in the thickness gauge probe generates high-frequency ultrasonic pulses, which pass through the coating and reflect back to the probe at the coating/substrate interface. The instrument accurately measures the time difference between the emission and reception of ultrasonic waves, combined with the known propagation speed of ultrasonic waves in the coating material, and calculates the coating thickness through a formula.
The advantage of ultrasonic method is that it can measure the thickness of coatings on various substrate materials, including metals, plastics, concrete, etc. It is particularly suitable for measuring the thickness of each layer in multi-layer coating systems, and is not affected by the electromagnetic properties of the substrate material. In addition, ultrasonic methods can also measure thicker coatings, typically ranging from a few micrometers to a few millimeters. However, this method requires high flatness and coupling conditions on the coating surface, and usually requires the use of coupling agents to ensure good acoustic contact.
3、 Comparison and Application Selection of Two Methods
Both electromagnetic induction method and ultrasonic method have their own advantages, and in practical applications, it is necessary to choose according to specific situations. The electromagnetic induction method is easy and fast to operate, suitable for large-scale and online testing, but has limitations on the substrate material; The ultrasonic method has a wide range of applications and can measure various material combinations, but the operation is relatively complex and requires coupling agents.
In the automotive manufacturing industry, electromagnetic induction method is commonly used to detect the thickness of car body paint; In the aerospace field, the ultrasonic method is more suitable for measuring special coatings on composite materials. In the petrochemical industry, two methods are often used in combination: electromagnetic induction method for detecting anti-corrosion coatings on steel pipelines, and ultrasonic method for measuring protective coatings on concrete structures.
4、 Tips and precautions for using a thickness gauge
To ensure measurement accuracy, operators need to master the correct usage techniques. For electromagnetic induction method, calibration should be performed on a standard sample block of the same substrate material before measurement; Keep the probe perpendicular to the surface during measurement to avoid shaking. The ultrasonic method requires the use of appropriate coupling agents and the application of consistent probe pressure.
Common sources of error include insufficient substrate thickness (electromagnetic induction method), excessive surface roughness, and temperature changes affecting sound velocity (ultrasonic method). Regular calibration of instruments, cleaning of probes, and use of appropriate standard plates for calibration are key to ensuring long-term measurement accuracy. In addition, understanding the characteristics of coating materials, such as conductivity, acoustic impedance, etc., can also help select the best measurement methods and parameters.
