What tasks do plastic arc resistance testers need to do before testing?
Date: 2025-11-20Read: 1
  Plastic arc resistance testerIt is a device specifically designed to test the arc resistance of solid insulation materials such as plastics. Mainly used for arc resistance assessment of insulation materials such as plastics, resin adhesives, and insulating paints for electrical purposes in industries such as motors, appliances, and household appliances. When these materials are affected by arc discharge, they may form carbonized conductive pathways on the surface due to heat, chemical decomposition, or erosion, thereby losing their insulation properties. By testing with an arc resistance tester, the tolerance of these materials under arc action can be evaluated.
The plastic arc resistance tester applies a high-voltage arc on the sample through a high-voltage generator, observes and records the degree of carbonization and changes in conductivity of the sample under the action of the arc. The instrument will continuously trigger a high-voltage arc and monitor the time from the beginning of carbonization to the final conductivity of the sample. This time parameter directly reflects the arc resistance performance of the sample.
  Plastic arc resistance testerPreparation before testing:
1. Environmental and equipment inspection
Ensure that the laboratory environment meets the standard requirements:
Temperature: 23 ± 2 ℃
Relative humidity: 50 ± 5% RH (some standards may be relaxed)
Check if the instrument grounding is reliable and if the power supply voltage is stable.
Confirm that the interlock of the protective door, emergency stop button, and exhaust system (if any) are functioning properly.
2. Sample preparation
Cut the sample according to the standard (usually 120mm x 15mm x 3-6 mm);
Surface cleanliness, no oil stains, and no scratches;
Adjust the state for at least 24 hours in a standard environment.
3. Electrode inspection and installation
Check if the electrode is clean, free from erosion or deformation (usually made of stainless steel or tungsten alloy);
Adjust the electrodes according to standard requirements:
Spacing: typically 6.35 mm (ASTM D495);
Angle: The electrode axis is inclined at a 30 ° angle to the surface of the sample;
Pressure: Ensure that the electrode lightly touches the surface of the sample (some devices have spring loading).
4. Parameter settings
According to the testing standards:
Open circuit voltage: typically 12.5 kV AC (50/60 Hz) (ASTM D495);
Short circuit current: 40 mA ± 1 mA;
Power on/off cycle: such as the cycle of "1 minute power on+1 minute power off";
Termination conditions: Maximum testing time (e.g. 420 seconds) or sudden increase in current (to determine breakdown).
