In order to speed up the construction of national and regional innovation systems and give full play to the supporting role of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the national team of science and technology, the leaders of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the People's Government of Zhejiang Province and the People's Government of Ningbo City jointly signed an agreement on the joint construction of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (Ningbo Institute of Materials for short) on April 20, 2004. As a result, the "zero" breakthrough of the Institute of Systems of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Zhejiang Province was achieved, and the construction of Ningbo Institute of Materials Science was kicked off.
Since its establishment, Ningbo Materials Institute has closely integrated international technological development trends and national innovation driven development needs, focusing on "materials research", and has successively laid out four major fields: materials technology, materials+manufacturing, materials+energy, and materials+medical engineering. After more than 20 years of effort, it has become an important research base and technology provider in the field of new materials and related areas.
Ningbo Materials Institute has built a full chain innovation platform integrating basic research, industrial technology, engineering, and testing and evaluation, with advanced scientific research equipment worth 1.3 billion yuan; 45 provincial and ministerial level platforms have been established, including the National Key Laboratory for Marine Key Materials and the National Graphene Innovation Center.
Ningbo Materials Institute seizes the opportunity of transformation, focuses on high-quality development, establishes an effective cooperation model between the institute and the enterprise, explores a new path for the transfer and transformation of scientific and technological achievements in the new era, guarantees the security of the national industrial and supply chains with technology, and cultivates and develops new quality productivity. At present, extensive cooperation has been carried out with more than 1500 domestic enterprises and over 250 institutions worldwide, achieving the transfer and transformation of 96 major scientific and technological achievements, including large-sized single crystal diamond, amorphous soft magnetic tape materials, bio based platform compounds, 3D printed air rudders, elastic electronic sensors and their devices, intelligent omnidirectional mobile robots, TOPCon battery production equipment and technology, etc.
