Question: Why can't aluminum wire and copper wire be connected?
1. The potential of copper and aluminum is different, and the part in contact between copper and aluminum will accelerate the oxidation of the aluminum wire due to the reaction of the primary battery, resulting in poor contact at the copper aluminum joint over time. To connect them together, copper aluminum transition clamps or transition conduits must be used.
2. This is a chemical problem. Metals have relatively active and inactive chemical properties, such as gold, which never rusts. This indicates that gold is chemically inactive, while iron is prone to rusting. Iron is more active than gold, and if two metals are placed together, it will accelerate the oxidation of active metals. Compared to copper, aluminum is more active, and connecting the two types of cables will accelerate aluminum oxidation (i.e. rusting), affecting its use.
When copper and aluminum conductors are directly connected, the contact surfaces of these two metals are highly susceptible to the formation of electrolytes under the influence of moisture, carbon dioxide, and other impurities in the air, resulting in the formation of primary batteries with aluminum as the negative electrode and copper as the positive electrode, causing aluminum to undergo electrochemical corrosion and increasing the contact resistance at the copper aluminum connection.
In addition, due to the significant difference in elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficient between copper and aluminum, after multiple cold and hot cycles (power on and off) during operation, there will be a large gap at the contact point, which will affect the contact and increase the contact resistance. The increase in contact resistance will cause a temperature rise during operation. Corrosion and oxidation will intensify at high temperatures, creating a vicious cycle that further deteriorates the quality of the connection, leading to high contact point temperatures and even accidents such as smoking and burning.
Question: Why is a copper aluminum transition wire clamp used when connecting copper and aluminum wires?
The gray white substance generated at the connection between copper wire and aluminum wire is aluminum oxide. If the time is slightly longer, the contact resistance at the connection will increase and heat will be generated, which can easily cause building fires when the circuit is on or off. So we need to use copper aluminum transition wire clamps. Avoid unnecessary trouble!
If copper and aluminum wires are directly twisted together, the joint is easily oxidized, resulting in increased resistance and making it more prone to burning out. The real reason for this kind of damage is that aluminum is much more active than copper, and a gradual increase in micro potential (i.e. micro battery) will be generated at the copper aluminum interface, resulting in micro electro corrosion. Over time, the contact resistance increases. When doing regular homework, it is more reliable to tin the copper first and then connect it.
In the power system, copper and aluminum are directly connected, and electrochemical corrosion occurs when current flows through them. Therefore, copper aluminum transition should be used, or tin pads should be placed in the middle of the contact surface, and a layer of conductive paste should be applied if possible. When connecting ordinary households, copper wires can be tinned and then connected to aluminum wires to avoid electrochemical corrosion.
