Molecular distillation is a special liquid-liquid separation technology, which is different from traditional distillation based on the principle of separation by boiling point difference of substances, but achieves separation based on the difference in average free path of molecular motion of each substance in the mixture. According to the principle of average free path of molecular motion, as shown in the figure on the right, in an ideal state, when a liquid mixture is heated by flowing along a heating plate, light and heavy molecules will escape from the liquid surface and enter the gas phase. Due to the different free paths of light and heavy molecules, the distance traveled by molecules of different substances after escaping from the liquid surface is different. If a condensation plate is properly set up, light molecules can be condensed and discharged when they reach the condensation plate, while heavy molecules cannot reach the condensation plate and are discharged along the mixed liquid. This can achieve the goal of separating substances. Based on this principle, various evaporators such as falling film, centrifugal, and scraping film have been designed. In practical operation, it is difficult to achieve the ideal molecular distillation separation due to various conditions. However, all evaporators have a common characteristic that the distance between the evaporation surface and the condensation surface is very short, and the distance from the molecules overflowing from the evaporation surface to condensing into liquid is very short. Therefore, they are called short-range stills.

The scraper scrapes the product into a very thin, turbulent liquid film. During this process, light molecules escaping from the heating surface reach the condenser and condense into liquid, which then flows down the condenser tubes and is discharged through the discharge tube located at the bottom of the evaporator; The residual liquid, i.e. heavy molecules, is collected in a circular channel under the heating zone and then flows out through the side discharge pipe.
