1、 The significance and application of blind hole method for measuring residual stress
Residual stresses exist in almost all structures, and they may be formed during the manufacturing process or generated during the service life of the structure. In many cases, especially when the structure is subjected to alternating loads or working in a corrosive environment, residual stresses are a major factor in structural failure. It is necessary to understand the residual stresses of the structure. Blind hole strain measurement technology is a semi non-destructive method suitable for determining residual stress.
II Basic principle of blind hole method for measuring residual stress
The blind hole method for measuring residual stress refers to drilling a small hole in a location with residual stress. As the residual stress near the hole is released, the residual stress field near the hole area changes. As long as the strain change in the local area is measured, the residual stress value before the release at the drilling site can be calculated.
Assuming there is a residual stress in an isotropic flat plate, if a small hole is drilled, the radial stress at the edge of the hole decreases to zero, and the stress near the hole area is redistributed, as shown in Figure 1. The shaded area represents the change in stress after drilling, which is called the released stress and is sensed by a strain gauge. Usually, surface residual stress is in a planar stress state, with two principal stresses and three unknowns of principal direction angle. It is required to use three strain sensitive grids to form a strain flower for measurement, with the center of each sensitive grid arranged on the same radius

3、 The equipment adopts independent data acquisition and calculation in three directions, multiple data verification design, and comprehensive anti-interference technologies such as digital filtering and hardware filtering to ensure the accuracy and stability of measurement data.

4、 The device comes with a micro intelligent printer that can print the released strain values in three directions and the calculated residual stress values δ 1, δ 2, as well as the angle θ between the principal stress directions on site.

5、 Corresponding release coefficients A and B values, as well as the sensitivity coefficient of strain gauges, can be set according to the material of the tested workpiece to adapt to different workpieces and strain gauges.

The basic steps of the blind hole residual stress tester are as follows:

Select residual stress measurement points on the workpiece, usually the point with the highest residual stress value or the point with the highest load-bearing capacity during use;

Polish the surface of the measured point to a roughness of around Ra0.8;

Clean the polished surface thoroughly with acetone or alcohol;

★ Paste the strain rosette (gauge) on the measured point with fast gel;

★ After the fast gel has solidified, connect the lead wire of the strain gauge on the strain gauge with the measuring wire of the residual stress detector through the wiring terminal;

★ Adjust the residual stress detector to zero;

★ Use a device to drill a blind hole with a diameter of 2mm and a depth of approximately 2.5mm at the center of the strain gauge;

After 15 minutes of drilling, use a detector to measure the amount of stress released after drilling, and automatically calculate the magnitude and direction of residual stress.
