Glossiness is important for products, therefore, it can be obtained by continuously testing each product or different batches of products to obtain glossiness values.

Gloss can also be used to measure surface quality, for example: a decrease in glossiness of a surface coating indicates that the surface may need to be reprocessed; Other factors that can cause a decrease in glossiness include low viscosity of the coating or insufficient surface coating quantity.

It is precisely because of these factors that many manufacturing industries, from automobiles, printing, furniture to food, pharmaceuticals, electronic products, etc., require gloss testing of their products.

The measurement of gloss is achieved by shining a certain amount of light on the surface of an object, and then quantifying the amount of reflected light. The testing method for the angle and reflection of light is determined by the surface and appearance of the object.

ISO2813 and ASTM D523 (commonly used standards) describe three measurement angles for measuring glossiness on all surfaces.

The unit of glossiness is the Gloss Unit (GU), which can be traced back to reference standards held by BAM (Germany), NRC (Canada), or NPL (UK).

• General measurement angle: 60 °

-All gloss levels can be measured using a standard 60 ° measurement angle. Usually, reference angles of 85 ° and 20 ° are given for low gloss and high gloss grades, respectively.

• Low gloss: 85 °

-Measure the resolution of low gloss surface improvement using an 85 ° ground contact angle. The party recommends this angle for surfaces with a measurement value of less than 10GU at 60 °.

-This angle also has a large measurement spot, which will average the glossiness differences of textured or slightly uneven surfaces.

• High gloss: 20 °

-Measure an acute angle of 20 ° to improve resolution for high gloss surfaces. At a standard angle of 60 °, surfaces with a measurement value greater than 70GU are usually measured at this angle.

-The 20 ° angle is more sensitive to the haze effect that affects the surface appearance.
