| Metallographic examination of gray cast iron scope This document specifies the preparation of specimens, inspection items, rating charts, result representation, and test reports for metallographic examination of gray cast iron. It is applicable for evaluating the microstructure of gray cast iron. GB/T 5611 Foundry Terminology GB/T 13298 Method for microstructure examination of metals 3 Terms and definitions The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 5611 and the following are applicable to this document. 3.1 Graphite length The maximum straight-line distance between any two points on the contour of a graphite sheet. Sample Preparation 4.1 Metallographic specimens should be taken from the test block or casting, and the testing surface should avoid the casting surface. 4.2 Metallographic specimens shall be prepared in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 13298. During the process of cutting and preparing metallographic specimens, measures shall be taken to prevent changes in the microstructure, graphite peeling, and graphite dragging. The surface of the specimen shall be smooth and free from coarse scratches. 5 Inspection Items and Rating Chart 5.1 Distribution morphology of graphite 5.1.1 To inspect the distribution morphology of graphite in polished state, first observe the entire inspected surface and evaluate it according to the corresponding rating chart based on the graphite morphology in most fields of view, with a magnification of 100 times. According to the distribution pattern of graphite, it can be divided into six types, as shown in Figure 1, and detailed explanations can be found in Table 1. Appendix C provides typical examples of the distribution morphology of flake graphite.
