Laser etching is one of the main methods used for printing labels on integrated circuits. Part of the reason is that laser marking is a tamper proof identification method. Anti tampering markings greatly help reduce IC counterfeits and also facilitate the sale of IC products with higher speed and specifications.

As IC packaging becomes smaller and thinner, the measurement requirements for laser etched step height have become more important. The target depth of laser etching is described by two indicators. Firstly, the depth must be sufficient to provide tamper proof markings that can be read by the IC system. Secondly, the depth should not be excessive and should not damage the circuits on the chip.

The surface roughness of etched marks is an important factor in controlling whether the final mark can be easily read by machines or human eyes. The rougher the surface, the more dispersed the light, which can increase the contrast between the mark and its surrounding surface.
