GIBCO a-MEM/DMEM basic culture mediumMEM α (Minimum Essential Medium α) is widely used in mammalian cell culture and screening of DHFR negative cells transfected with it. MEM α can be used in various suspended and adherent mammalian cells, including keratinocytes, primary rat astrocytes, and human melanoma cells. For a wide range of cell culture applications, multiple components of MEM alpha modified culture medium are provided.

MEM alpha is an improved version of essential culture medium (MEM), which also provides a nucleoside free version that can be used as a screening medium for DG44 and other DHFR negative cells. This product is made from Earle's balanced salt. MEM α does not contain proteins, lipids, or growth factors. Therefore, MEM alpha requires supplementation, typically with the addition of 10% (FBS). MEM α uses a NAHCO3 buffer system (2.2 g/L), therefore requiring a 5-10% CO2 environment to maintain physiological pH.
