The GBT 242-2007 metal pipe expansion testing machine is mainly used to test the expansion force of seamless pipes and welded pipes with outer diameter ≤ 150mm (non-ferrous metal pipes ≤ 100mm) and wall thickness ≤ 10mm.

The length of the sample depends on the angle of the top core. When the top core angle is equal to or less than 30 °, the length L of the specimen should be approximately 2D; when the top core angle is greater than 30 °, the length L of the specimen should be approximately 1.5D. If the remaining length of the cylindrical part after the expansion test is not less than 0.5D, a shorter specimen can be used.

2.The two end faces of the sample should be perpendicular to the axis of the pipe. The edge of the experimental end can be rounded or chamfered using a beam or other methods. Note: If the test results meet the test requirements, the edges of the specimen may not be rounded or chamfered.

When testing welded pipes, the excess weld height inside the pipe can be removed.

The experiment should generally be conducted within the room temperature range of 10 ℃ to 35 ℃. For tests required to be conducted under controlled conditions, the test temperature should be 23 ℃± 5 ℃

2. Apply a steady force to the conical core to press it into the end of the specimen for expansion until the required outer diameter is reached. During the expansion period, the axis of the conical core should be consistent with the axis of the specimen.

The expansion rate expressed as a percentage of the original outer diameter D or the larger outer diameter D of the sample after expansion should be specified in the relevant product standards. The top core angle β should also be specified in the relevant product standards.

When testing longitudinal welded pipes, it is allowed to use grooved top cores to accommodate the weld seam height inside the pipe.

3. Allow lubrication of the top core. During the experiment, the top core should not rotate relative to the specimen.

When disputes arise, the movement speed of the pressure plate should not exceed 50mm/min

5. The evaluation of the results of the expansion test should be based on the requirements of relevant product standards. When there is no provision in the product standard, if there are no visible cracks without using a magnifying glass, it should be evaluated as qualified. Slight cracking at the edges and corners of the sample should not be considered as scrap.
