The commonly used methods for concentrating aqueous solutions are evaporation or membrane separation. The commonly used method in the laboratory is rotary evaporation, which requires heating and vacuuming to remove moisture. Freeze concentration is a "unique" concentration process: ice crystals are produced by cooling a water solution, and countless ice crystals steadily grow into "ice balls". The ice balls are removed through a simple particle separation process, and the remaining solution is the concentrated product.

Due to researchers' lack of understanding of cold concentration technology, it is difficult to promote its industrial application. Academician Chen Xiaodong has been developing large-scale cold concentration equipment for concentrated milk on pastures at the University of Auckland in New Zealand since 1995. He has also developed the Freezcon three in one cold concentration technology, which greatly reduces the equipment cost of traditional cold concentration technology. Subsequently, feasibility studies were conducted for applications in sewage treatment and seawater desalination.
