Fluorescence imaging endoscope hasPoint scanning confocal * * technology. The miniature probe is embedded in a complex mechanical scanner, including a pair of lenses, to focus the laser at the desired precise depth. The laser is transmitted, and the returning light is captured through an optical fiber that moves (scans) across the field of view to capture the entire image. The system controls the speed of fiber scanning and can be adjusted accordingly based on the laser power to provide the best results.
The following figure compares traditional bundled fiber optic technology (left) with Optiscan point scanning technology (right). Image set A displays sample scans at full screen resolution. Image set B represents the focal region (point of interest) of the sample image, while image set C is a scaled view of that focal region. As you can see, traditional bundled fiber optic technology cannot provide clarity and detail anywhere close to point scanning technology.
