Before knowing the cause of welding cracks in flanges, the first thing to know is the type of crack, whether it is a hot crack or a cold crack. Depending on the type of crack, the cause also varies. Welding is a manufacturing process and technology that involves heating, high temperature, or high pressure connections between metals and other thermoplastic materials such as plastics. Hot cracks are cracks generated during the high-temperature stage of the welding cooling process, mainly existing in the welded metal. When the carbon content exceeds 0.04%, carbides will be produced, and the more carbides there are, the lower the corrosion resistance and brittleness of the steel. Welding the flange with stainless steel pipes at this time may cause cracks.
2. The influence of heat treatment process: Austenitic stainless steel requires solution treatment to improve corrosion resistance. The temperature of solution treatment is related to the carbon content in the steel. High carbon content, requires high heating temperature, fast cooling speed, and uses cold water. The slow cooling rate of solution treatment not only reduces the corrosion resistance of steel. It can also damage the continuity of welding and cause cracks.
3. Welding stress.
Welding consists of two parts: heating and cooling. When the heat source moves along the welded object, the temperature at a certain point on the welded object increases from low to high over time, and when it reaches the limit value, it increases from high to low, forming a welding thermal cycle. During welding, due to the concentrated intensity of the heat source, the heating speed is much faster than the heat treatment conditions, and the locally heated area continues to move. Therefore, the welding area near the flange is subjected to complex welding stresses during welding, resulting in cracks.
