The direct time method uses a glass tube engraved with three "timelines" to measure the "bubble second", which is the time required for a bubble to pass vertically through a known distance in a glass tube of known diameter. The 'bubble second' can be transformed into a Stokes value. The time required for bubbles to rise is directly proportional to the viscosity of the fluid, and the faster the bubbles rise, the lower the viscosity of the fluid.

Operation steps of bubble viscometer:
*Knowing the approximate viscosity value, select four standard glass tubes that are closest in viscosity to the sample;
*Fill the sample glass tube with fluid, insert a cork stopper, and use a test tube holder (model 0577) to insert four glass tubes labeled with letters into the test tube holder;
*Reverse the test tube rack and visually compare which glass tube labeled with a letter has the closest bubble rise time to the sample glass tube;
*A timer can be used to measure the number of seconds bubbles rise in sealed glass tubes and sample glass tubes;
