Taking the solenoid valve in the Audi valve lift control system (AVS) as an example, its working principle is as follows:
The sliding of the cam block on the camshaft is achieved by inserting the guide pin into the spiral groove on the cam block.
As the main actuating element, the insertion of the guide pin has timing and position requirements, and this action relies on an electromagnetic valve to push it.
The AVS solenoid valve does not use a traditional structure. Its moving mechanism uses armature plates with permanent magnets, which are lightweight, eliminate return springs, and use low resistance electromagnetic coils. When excited, the electromagnetic field generated is more powerful, which can achieve faster movement speed of the guide pin.
When the electromagnetic coil is excited, the acceleration of the guide pin can reach 100g, and the extension time is 18-22ms. In order to protect the armature plate from shattering the magnet when it hits the base, there is a soft damping ring between the armature plate and the permanent magnet to achieve buffering.
After the metal pin is pushed out, the engine ECU disconnects the power supply of the solenoid valve, and the position of the metal pin relies on the permanent magnet to adhere to the base of the solenoid valve. As the cam block rotates, the rear section of the guide groove uses mechanical force to push the metal pin back, and the solenoid valve returns to its original position.
