The scale probe is driven into the mold or core by a spring-loaded hammer inside the instrument body. The number of hammer strikes required to drive the probe a given distance (equal impact force) represents the subsurface strength.

The spring load on the hammer is adjustable. The probe is graduated in increments of 1 centimeter and is easy to disassemble, so the tester can be carried in the special leather case provided. An additional probe is provided for replacement.
