working principle

DUKANE DK120/90 underwater positioning beacon from the United StatesIt is a battery powered underwater sound pulse generator (lighthouse/sonar beacon) that is activated when the water switch is immersed in fresh or saltwater.


The water switch is part of the low current trigger circuit, and when the water switch is closed, it will activate the normal pulse of the beacon oscillator circuit. The output voltage of the oscillator is coupled with the piezoelectric ceramic transducer ring.


The resulting mechanical motion is transmitted to the metal casing of the beacon, which then radiates sound energy into the surrounding water at a frequency of 37.5 kHz. The duration of the generated pulse is about 10 milliseconds, occurring approximately once per second, as shown in the following figure.


The beacon can work for at least 90 days after immersion in water. The maximum depth that the beacon can withstand is 20000 feet (6096 meters). Using the N30A5 series locator, beacons can be detected within a range of 2000 to 4000 yards (1800 to 3600 meters).


Sea conditions, nearby vessels, marine life, oil and gas pipelines, and other factors that affect environmental noise levels may affect the detectable range of beacons.


The beacon can be operated and tested using either the 42A12/1 ultrasonic testing device or the TS200 portable testing device.


Specification

Once activated, the DK120/90 device will provide at least 90 days of continuous uninterrupted operation, in compliance with TSO/ETSO-C112b standards. The device has been tested and meets and/or exceeds all requirements of FAA/EASA TSO/ETSO-C112b and SAE AS8045A, and has undergone additional testing on the battery according to TSO/ETSO-C142a standards. The improvement of DK120/90 equipment based on the reliability of DK120 will help locate CVR (cockpit voice recorder)/FDR (flight data recorder) equipment.
