The Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded on March 19, 1949, formerly known as the "Institute of Science of Dalian University". In 1950, it was renamed as the Dalian Branch of Northeast Science Research Institute.

In 1952, it was transferred to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and named "Institute of Industrial Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences".

In 1954, according to the arrangement of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he was mainly engaged in research and development related to petrochemical and chemical engineering, and was renamed "Institute of Petroleum Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences".

Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, founded in March 1949, is a chemical and chemical research institute that attaches equal importance to applied research and basic research, has strong technical development strength, and mainly undertakes major national and enterprise projects.

For more than half a century, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics has closely integrated with the needs of national economic construction, carried out various scientific research and technological development work, gradually formed its own characteristics in the fields of catalytic chemistry, engineering chemistry, organic synthesis chemistry, chemical laser and molecular reaction kinetics, modern analytical chemistry and biotechnology mainly based on chromatography, and achieved a series of major scientific and technological achievements, making important contributions to the development of science and technology and national economic construction.

In the 1950s, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics successfully developed various catalysts such as "water gas synthesis of liquid fuel" and "seven carbon fraction cyclization to produce toluene", which met the urgent needs of the country. In the 1960s, a hydroisomerization catalyst was successfully developed for the production of low freezing point aviation kerosene; We have successfully developed a new process for purifying the raw gas of synthetic ammonia, which has propelled China's synthetic ammonia industry from the level of the 1940s to the level of the 1960s. In the 1970s, comprehensive research on aerospace hydrogen oxygen fuel cells was carried out, and two battery systems were successfully developed domestically for use as the main energy source for spacecraft and satellites, making important contributions to the development of China's aerospace industry. In the 1980s, the hollow fiber nitrogen hydrogen membrane separation technology was successfully developed for the recovery of hydrogen from synthetic ammonia purge gas. In the 1990s, the catalytic cracking dry gas to ethylbenzene technology with independent innovation intellectual property rights in China was successfully developed, opening up a new path for the rational utilization of refinery gas resources; In addition, research on short wavelength chemical lasers has also reached an advanced level.

Especially since the pilot work of the Knowledge Innovation Project was launched in 1998, the scientific research achievements of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics have been even more impressive. The study of excited state molecular spectra and state resolved collision energy transfer using the double resonance ionization method won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award in 1999; Successfully developed a UV resonance Raman spectrometer and won the second prize of National Technical Invention Award in 1999; The natural gas desulfurization technology won the second prize of the National Technical Invention Award in 2001 and was successfully applied to the desulfurization of the Shaanxi Beijing natural gas transmission project; Methane anaerobic aromatization won the second prize of National Natural Science Award in 2005; Polyolefin deoxidizer won the second prize of National Technical Invention Award in 2005; The new method for producing basic chemical raw material epoxypropane and the research results on molecular reaction kinetics have been published in the journals Nature and Science, winning high praise from peers. The development of China's * 30 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell electric vehicle was successfully tested in Shiyan, Hubei in 2001; The hydrazine decomposition catalyst for attitude control has been successfully applied to the "Shenzhou" series spacecraft, making important contributions to the success of China's manned spaceflight; The industrialization project of methanol to olefins has made significant breakthroughs, laying the foundation for China's chemical raw materials to achieve the goal of "replacing oil with coal".

Since its establishment, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics has created a number of scientists with high reputation at home and abroad and a large number of high-quality research and technical talents. 14 scientists have been elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the CAE Member, 13 have won the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 26 have been introduced into the Hundred Talents Program. At the end of 2008, there were a total of 843 employees in the institute, including 688 professional and technical personnel, 88 researchers, and 172 associate researchers.

As of the end of 2007, the institute had published over 9700 scientific papers, applied for 1996 patents, including 1809 inventions and 884 authorizations, with a total of 60 applications abroad. Hosted three academic journals, Natural Gas Chemistry (English Edition), Chromatography, and Catalysis Journal, opened 21 databases, and collected over 65000 books in the library.

Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics is an authorized institution by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to cultivate doctoral and master's degrees. It has the authority to confer doctoral degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering, as well as the approval authority for doctoral supervisor qualifications. There are a total of 62 doctoral supervisors, 795 graduate students, and 1318 graduate students have been trained, including 680 doctoral supervisors.

So far, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics has established extensive scientific and technological cooperation and exchange relationships with 32 countries. We have established the Sino French Joint Laboratory for Catalysis, the Sino German Nanotechnology Partnership Group for Catalysis, the DICP Samsung Fuel Cell Joint Laboratory, the BP China Research Center, and the Theoretical Chemistry Cooperation Center. We have successively carried out the Sino German Fuel Cell Cooperation Research Program, the DICP Bayer Combination Chemistry Cooperation Research Program, the DICP-BASF Catalytic Reaction Characterization Cooperation Research, and the DICP-LILLY Compound Synthesis and Analysis Cooperation Research, achieving many significant scientific and technological achievements and enhancing the competitiveness of the research institute.

Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics currently has ten research laboratories, including three key laboratories and four research centers. To carry out strategic, fundamental, and forward-looking innovative work in the field of selective control chemistry and engineering. We have established a scientific and technological development strategy that prioritizes sustainable energy research, while adhering to the coordinated development of resource and environmental optimization and biotechnology innovation. The overall goal is to build the Institute of Chemical Physics into a world-class research institute with strong comprehensive competitiveness by 2010, integrating leading basic research, strategic high-tech innovation, and high-tech industrialization, with a reasonable layout.
In 1962, it was adjusted again to become a multi-disciplinary comprehensive institute with equal emphasis on basic research and applied research, and its name was also changed to "Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences".

The successive directors of the institute since its establishment include scientists and educators such as Qu Bochuan, Dong Chen, Zhang Dayu, Gu Yijian, Lou Nanquan, Zhang Cunhao, Yuan Quan, Yang Bailing, Deng Maicun, Bao Xinhe, and Zhang Tao.
