Radar level gauge microwave measurement technology: principles, advantages, and applications
Date: 2025-04-14Read: 2
Principle: Radar level gauge microwave measurement technology is based on the principle of microwave reflection. It emits microwave signals to the surface of the tested material through an antenna. When the microwave signal encounters the surface of the material, some of the signal will be reflected back, and the antenna will receive the reflected echo. Based on the propagation time and speed of microwaves, the height of the object can be calculated. Common measurement methods include pulse radar (PR) and frequency modulated continuous wave radar (FMCW). Pulse radar emits microwave pulses and measures the time difference between the transmitted wave and the reflected wave; Frequency modulated continuous wave radar emits a continuous wave with a linear change in frequency over time, and calculates the distance by measuring the frequency difference between the transmitted wave and the reflected wave.
Advantage: High precision is a significant feature, usually reaching millimeter level, which can meet the accuracy requirements of scenarios. Its non-contact measurement method avoids direct contact between the measuring element and the medium, making it suitable for harsh environments such as high temperature, high pressure, toxicity, flammability, and explosiveness. Meanwhile, microwave has strong penetration and is almost unaffected by factors such as temperature, pressure, steam, and dust, resulting in stable and reliable measurement results. In addition, the radar level gauge is easy to install and can be directly installed outside the liquid level tank without entering the liquid for measurement, with low maintenance costs.
Application: In the petrochemical industry, it is used for real-time monitoring of the storage capacity of raw materials, intermediate products, and finished products in oil tanks and refining equipment, ensuring production safety and efficiency. In the field of power and energy, the levels of fly ash and gypsum slurry are monitored in the ash storage and desulfurization tower of coal-fired power plants to ensure environmental compliance and normal equipment operation. The food and beverage industry, due to its hygienic and pollution-free characteristics, has become an ideal measuring tool for storage tanks such as syrup, alcohol, and oil. In terms of water and sewage treatment, accurate measurement of water level and optimization of water resource management are carried out in facilities such as sewage treatment tanks and water treatment plant reservoirs.
