As the core equipment for oil-water mixture detection, the oil-water stratification instrument integrates interdisciplinary principles and achieves high-precision positioning and dynamic monitoring of the oil-water interface through non-contact or contact measurement methods. Its technical system can be divided into three core modules:
1、 Physical characteristic difference perception technology
The core foundation of oil-water stratification instrument lies in the differential perception of oil-water physical characteristics. The density difference between oil and water (oil density 0.91-0.95g/cm ³ vs water 1g/cm ³) is the physical basis of gravity separation, while the conductivity difference (oil conductivity ≈ 10 ⁻¹⁴ S/mvs water ≈ 10 ⁻³ S/m) becomes a key parameter for capacitive detection. Modern instruments use high-frequency capacitive sensors to measure the changes in the dielectric constant of oil-water mixtures (oil dielectric constant ≈ 2.2 vs water ≈ 80), combined with the cylindrical capacitor formula C=K ε 2+K (ε 1 − ε 2) S (where ε ₁ is the dielectric constant of water, ε ₂ is the dielectric constant of oil, and S is the moisture content), to achieve quantitative analysis of moisture content. For example, in the oil storage and transportation process, the capacitive oil moisture analyzer can detect ppm level moisture content with a measurement accuracy of ± 0.001%.
2、 Multimodal signal processing technology
In response to measurement interference under complex working conditions, the instrument adopts multi-sensor fusion technology. The ultrasonic method achieves non-contact interface detection by measuring the relationship between sound velocity and liquid density (c=ρ k1). In monitoring the water content of crude oil, ultrasonic sensors can identify changes in oil layer thickness up to 0.1mm. The radiation type monitoring instrument utilizes the strong absorption characteristics of water for gamma rays and measures the transmission intensity to invert the moisture content. Its 0-100% full range measurement capability makes it a solution for offshore platforms, but it needs to solve the problem of radiation protection. Modern instruments often integrate micro turbine flow meters and micro capacitance water holdup meters. By using Kriging interpolation algorithm to construct a two-dimensional distribution map of water holdup, combined with numerical simulation of N-S equation, a flow measurement error of ± 8% can be achieved in horizontal well stratification testing.
3、 Intelligent adaptive control technology
To cope with interface fluctuations during dynamic separation processes, the instrument introduces a closed-loop control system. Taking the kitchen oil-water separator as an example, its automatic oil discharge system monitors the thickness of the oil layer in real time through ultrasonic sensors. When the oil layer is ≥ 50mm, the pneumatic oil discharge valve starts to discharge oil at a pressure of 0.6-0.8MPa. Combined with polypropylene packing, the oil droplet size is aggregated from 20 μ m to over 2mm, reducing the oil content in the effluent to below 15ppm. In industrial scenarios, the layering tester ensures stable contact between the sensor and the wellbore wall through a support arm structure. Its five level measurement points can collect axial velocity gradient data, and combined with grid integration method to calculate layered flow rate, maintaining measurement stability within the flow rate range of 50-200m ³/d.
4、 High precision measurement implementation path
Material innovation: Using PTFE coated sensors, the oil adhesion rate is reduced by 90%, and the calibration cycle is extended to 6 months.
Algorithm optimization: Introducing deep learning models to process multi parameter coupled data, reducing response time to 0.2 seconds under conditions of sudden changes in moisture content.
Structural innovation: The vortex air flotation collaborative separation technology generates 30 μ m level microbubbles through a 150-200rpm vortex, increasing the floating speed of oil droplets by three times and achieving a separation efficiency of over 95%.
From laboratory principles to industrial field applications, the oil-water stratification instrument has built a high-precision measurement system that covers the entire range and adapts to multiple scenarios through collaborative innovation of three core technologies: physical property perception, multimodal signal processing, and intelligent control. In the context of carbon neutrality, this technology is evolving towards miniaturization (such as handheld infrared moisture detectors) and intelligence (AI driven self diagnostic systems), providing key technical support for fields such as energy, environmental protection, and food processing.
