Working principle and system composition of dynamic fatigue testing machine: precise force application and perception
Date: 2025-09-10Read: 0

From the wings of airplanes flying over the sky, to the chassis of cars galloping across the earth, to the artificial joints implanted in the human body, almost all engineering structures and biomedical devices are subjected to repeated alternating loads. The fatigue performance of materials, which refers to the characteristic of gradually developing damage until fracture under cyclic loading, directly determines the service life and safety of products. The dynamic fatigue testing machine is a core equipment specifically designed to simulate this process, study and evaluate the durability of materials and structures.

1、 Core mission: Why conduct fatigue testing?

Static strength testing can only tell us whether the material can withstand it once, while fatigue testing answers' how long it can withstand '. According to statistics, about 80% of engineering structure failures are fatigue failures, characterized by:

-Low stress failure: Failure occurs at stress levels far below the static strength of the material.

-Sudden and concealed: There is no obvious plastic deformation before fracture, making it difficult to warn.

-Extremely sensitive to defects: tiny cracks, scratches, or internal defects can significantly shorten the lifespan.

Therefore, the core value of dynamic fatigue testing lies in:

1. Draw S-N curve: By testing the number of cycles at different stress levels, draw the stress (S) - life (N) curve to provide key data for design.

2. Determine fatigue limit: Find the maximum stress value that the material can theoretically withstand infinite cycles without failure.

3. Evaluate crack propagation rate: Study the entire process of crack initiation, propagation, and fracture (based on fracture mechanics).

4. Verify product reliability: Simulate actual working conditions, conduct bench tests on the entire vehicle, assembly or key components to ensure their design life.

2、 Working principle and system composition of dynamic fatigue testing machine: precise force application and perception

The dynamic fatigue testing machine is a complex electro-hydraulic servo or electric servo control system, with closed-loop control as its core. The basic working principle is that the system drives the actuator to apply force to the sample based on the waveform signal of the set load (or displacement, strain), and at the same time, measures the feedback signal in real-time through high-precision sensors, compares and corrects it with the set value, and forms an accurate control loop.

A complete system mainly consists of the following parts:

1. Loading frame: A high-strength frame that provides reactive force, usually a double column or door structure, to ensure accurate application of load to the specimen.

2. Actors: The "muscles" of the system.

-Electric type: using servo motor and ball screw, high precision, clean, suitable for high-frequency and low load testing.

-Electro hydraulic servo type: using servo valves to control hydraulic oil to drive pistons, with high output force and long stroke, suitable for testing large tonnage and low frequency.

3. Servo controller: the "brain" of the system. Receive testing software instructions and sensor feedback, adjust the output in real-time through complex PID algorithms, and precisely control the motion of the actuator.

4. Force, displacement, and strain sensors: the "senses" of the system. Real time monitoring of load, actuator displacement, and surface strain of the specimen, and feedback of signals to the controller.

5. Hydraulic source: Provides stable and high-pressure hydraulic power for the entire system.

6. Intelligent testing software: user interface. Used for setting complex load spectra (sine wave, triangular wave, square wave, or custom random waveform), monitoring real-time data, automatically recording test results, and automatically stopping the machine when the sample breaks.

3、 Main test types and applications of dynamic fatigue testing machine

1. High cycle fatigue test: The number of load cycles is usually higher than 10 ^ 7 times, with low stress levels, mainly used to study the basic fatigue performance of metal materials (such as drawing S-N curves).

2. Low cycle fatigue test: The cycle number is less than 10 ^ 5 times, the stress level is high, accompanied by plastic deformation, mainly used to evaluate the life of pressure vessels, turbine disks and other components.

3. Crack propagation test: Based on fracture mechanics, test the specimen with pre-set cracks to study the relationship between crack propagation rate (da/dN) and stress intensity factor amplitude (Δ K).

4. Simulated service test: Reproduce the load spectrum under real working conditions (such as road spectrum, flight spectrum), and conduct bench fatigue testing on components or assemblies (such as suspension, doors, connecting rods).

5. Thermal mechanical fatigue test: Simultaneously applying mechanical loads and temperature cycles to evaluate components such as aircraft engine blades operating in temperature changing environments.

4、 Core advantages and values

1. Data driven security design: Provide precise input for "anti fatigue design" to avoid insufficient design (premature failure) or excessive design (increased weight cost).

2. Accelerated life verification: Within a shorter experimental time, verify whether the product has achieved the design life target, greatly shortening the product development cycle.

3. Failure analysis and quality improvement: By analyzing fracture surfaces, tracing fatigue sources, improving manufacturing processes, heat treatment, and structural design, product quality can be fundamentally improved.

4. Prospective prediction: Combining finite element analysis (FEA) software to achieve mutual verification and correction between virtual fatigue simulation and physical testing.

The dynamic fatigue testing machine is a solid bridge connecting material science and engineering practice. It simulates the bumpy journey of a product's entire life through millions of repeated loading, testing the durability quality of materials in an almost "cruel" way. Every data point it provides is a serious examination of product reliability and safety. In the pursuit of lightweight, long lifespan, and high reliability in modern industry, this seemingly cold machine, with its irrefutable experimental data, has built a crucial safety defense line for human flight, driving, and life health. It is an unknown yet crucial "quality gatekeeper".
