What are the processes for using electron beam evaporation coating
Date: 2025-12-09Read: 3
Electron beam evaporation coating is a technique that uses an electron beam to heat materials in a vacuum environment, causing them to evaporate and deposit on the surface of a substrate to form a thin film. The following is a detailed introduction to its usage process:
1、 Preliminary preparation
1. Sample and material preparation: Select suitable vapor deposition materials according to the requirements, such as metals, alloys, or compounds, and place them in a water-cooled crucible. Pay attention to ensuring high material purity and no contamination.
2. Equipment inspection: Check whether all components of the equipment are intact, including the electron gun, vacuum pump, cooling system, etc. Confirm that the power connection is normal and that the vacuum chamber is clean and free of impurities.
3. Substrate installation: Fix the substrate to be coated onto the sample holder, ensuring its accurate and stable position. For substrates with complex shapes, the sample holder needs to be adjusted to ensure good coverage.
2、 Vacuum pumping
1. Start the vacuum pump: First, turn on the mechanical pump to initially reduce the air pressure inside the chamber to a lower level (generally below 10Pa). Then start the molecular pump to further reduce the air pressure to a high vacuum state (usually around 5 × 10 ⁻ ² Pa).
2. Maintain a vacuum environment: Throughout the entire coating process, it is necessary to continuously monitor the pressure inside the chamber to ensure that it is within the set range, in order to ensure the stability and controllability of the vapor deposition process.
3、 Electron beam heating and evaporation
1. Electron beam generation and focusing: Turn on the power of the electron gun to emit the electron beam. By adjusting the magnetic field strength to control the deflection radius of the electron beam, the electron beam can accurately land on the deposited material inside the crucible.
2. Material evaporation: Increase the filament current and electron beam power to gradually melt and eventually vaporize the deposited material. During this process, it is necessary to closely monitor the evaporation state of the material to ensure that it is uniformly heated and fully evaporated.
3. Film thickness monitoring and control: Real time monitoring of coating thickness using a film thickness control system. When the expected thickness is reached, automatically or manually close the baffle to stop evaporation.
4、 Post processing
1. Turn off the device: Turn off the electron beam scanning switch, current, voltage, and the main power supply of the device in reverse order. Ensure that all parameters are reset to zero before proceeding to the next step.
2. Breaking the vacuum and retrieving parts: Inject nitrogen or other inert gas into the chamber to restore the pressure to atmospheric pressure. Then open the chamber door and take out the plated sample.
3. Sample testing: Conduct comprehensive quality testing and performance testing on the extracted samples to ensure they meet the process requirements and application standards.
The process of using electron beam evaporation coating involves multiple steps. Each step requires strict control of conditions and parameters to ensure the quality of the final result. With the development and improvement of technology, this technology will play an important role in more fields.
