Examples of specific types of gas sensors
Date: 2025-10-28Read: 2
Gas sensors are key devices that detect the presence and concentration of specific gases and convert relevant information into readable output signals.
1. Core mechanism: Gas sensors undergo physical or chemical reactions with the measured gas through sensitive materials, causing changes in certain measurable characteristics (such as resistance, current, voltage, frequency, temperature, optical properties, etc.), which are then converted into electrical signals for output. This process achieves the conversion from gas components to electrical signals, facilitating subsequent processing and analysis.
2. Examples of specific types
-Semiconductor type: using the change in electrical resistivity of metal oxide semiconductor materials in contact with specific gases to detect gases. For example, when an oxidizing gas is adsorbed onto an N-type semiconductor, the reduction of charge carriers leads to an increase in resistivity; When the reducing gas adsorbs onto the P-type semiconductor, the increase in charge carriers leads to a decrease in resistivity. Common materials include SnO2, ZnO, etc;
-Catalytic combustion type: A high-temperature resistant catalyst layer is prepared on the surface of a platinum resistor. Combustible gases undergo flameless combustion on its surface, generating heat that changes the resistance value, and this change is proportional to the gas concentration;
-Electrochemical formula: Gas passes through a filter membrane and enters the interior of the sensor, reacting with liquid electrolyte to generate current or voltage signals, commonly used in high-precision detection scenarios;
-Infrared Absorption Type (NDIR): Based on the selective absorption of specific wavelength infrared light by the target gas, the gas concentration can be calculated by detecting the degree of light intensity attenuation. It is suitable for the analysis of components such as methane with characteristic absorption peaks.
Precautions for using gas sensors:
1. Installation environment considerations
-Avoiding interference sources: Avoid installing sensors near vibration sources, as mechanical vibrations may affect the stability of their internal structure and introduce additional noise signals; At the same time, it is also necessary to stay away from high-temperature areas, as high temperatures may cause material expansion and contraction, altering the performance characteristics of the sensor. In addition, for environments prone to corrosion, appropriate protective measures should be taken to prevent corrosive gases from directly contacting the sensor surface and causing damage.
-Good ventilation conditions: Ensure sufficient air flow around the sensor, which helps to quickly diffuse the measured gas, improve response speed and recovery time. However, when using outdoors, attention should also be paid to issues such as wind, sand, and rainwater invasion.
2. Electrical safety regulations
-Correct wiring: Connect the power and signal lines strictly according to the circuit diagram provided in the product manual to avoid short circuits or reversed polarity. It is recommended to use color coded wires with markings for easy identification and maintenance. When working in complex electromagnetic environments, shielded cables should also be used to reduce the impact of external electromagnetic fields on signal transmission.
-Grounding treatment: To prevent safety accidents caused by static electricity accumulation, all metal enclosed equipment should be properly grounded. Especially during dry seasons or when dealing with flammable and explosive substances, this should be taken into account.
3. Daily maintenance and upkeep
-Regular calibration: Due to issues such as zero drift and decreased sensitivity caused by long-term use, the sensor must be calibrated according to the manufacturer's recommended cycle. This can be achieved through standard gas cylinders or other certified reference materials. Timely calibration not only ensures measurement accuracy, but also extends the service life of the equipment.
-Cleaning and maintenance: Regularly clean the dust, oil stains, and other pollutants on the surface of the sensor, especially the air inlet, to prevent blockage and affect normal ventilation. You can use a soft brush to gently wipe, do not rinse or soak in water. In addition, check whether the sealing ring is intact and undamaged. If there is aging or cracking, it should be replaced in a timely manner.
