1、 Working principle
Ultrasonic open channel flowmeter is a non-contact flow measurement instrument mainly used for flow monitoring of open channels (such as drainage ditches, rivers, irrigation channels, etc.). The core principle is based on the Time of Flight (TOF) or Doppler effect of ultrasound:
Time difference method: The probe emits ultrasonic waves towards the water surface, measures the time difference between the transmission and reception of the sound waves, and combines the known cross-sectional shape of the channel (such as a Bacher trough, triangular weir, etc.) to calculate the water level height and flow velocity, and finally obtains the flow rate (Q=flow velocity x cross-sectional area).
Doppler method: applicable to water flows containing suspended solids, analyzing flow velocity by detecting ultrasonic frequency offset, suitable for measuring sewage or mud flow.
2、 Technical advantages
Compared to traditional mechanical or weir flow meters, ultrasonic open channel flow meters have significant advantages:
Non contact measurement: The probe does not come into contact with water, avoiding corrosion and blockage issues, and has a longer lifespan.
High precision: Using digital signal processing technology, the error can be controlled within ± 1% to ± 3%.
Easy installation: No need to intercept or modify channels, supports side or top installation.
Intelligent functions: equipped with temperature compensation, automatic calibration, data storage, and wireless transmission (4G/LoRa) capabilities.
Low maintenance: No moving parts, good long-term stability, suitable for harsh environments.
3、 Industry Applications
Municipal drainage and sewage treatment: Real time monitoring of sewage discharge volume to assist in environmental compliance.
Agricultural irrigation: Accurately measuring channel water volume and optimizing water resource allocation.
Industrial wastewater management: monitoring of wastewater flow in industries such as chemical and papermaking.
Water conservancy and hydrological monitoring: flow warning and flood control scheduling of rivers and reservoirs.
Mining and Metallurgy: Measurement of Tailings Reservoir Drainage to Prevent Overflow Risks.
4、 Future Trends
With the popularization of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, ultrasonic open channel flow meters are being combined with cloud platforms to achieve remote monitoring and big data analysis, promoting the development of smart water management and Industry 4.0.
Conclusion: Ultrasonic open channel flow meters have become the mainstream choice for open channel flow monitoring due to their non-contact, high reliability, and intelligent characteristics, and are widely used in environmental protection, agriculture, and industrial fields.
