Design of ventilation interface for dangerous goods cabinet: does it require external exhaust?
Date: 2025-12-13Read: 0
Whether the dangerous goods cabinet needs external ventilation is a high-frequency controversy in laboratory safety design. The answer is not absolute, but depends on the nature of the storage, frequency of use, and regulatory requirements.
According to NFPA 30 and OSHA standards, it is recommended to connect a mechanical exhaust system only when there is continuous volatile vapor present in the cabinet (such as frequent opening or storage of high vapor pressure solvents). Under normal circumstances, qualifiedDangerous goods cabinetIf it complies with UL 1275 or FM certification, it is equipped with self closing doors, double walls, bottom anti overflow grooves, and natural convection holes, which can be safely stored in a closed state. Blind external exhaust may actually create negative pressure, leading to the backflow of external air and the introduction of fire or moisture, increasing the risk.

However, external exhaust is necessary in the following scenarios:
Store a large amount of low boiling point solvents and take them multiple times a day;
The cabinet is located in a closed small room without overall ventilation guarantee;
Mandatory requirements of local regulations (such as environmental protection regulations in certain provinces and cities).
If you decide to outsource, you should pay attention to three points:
Exhaust air volume control: usually ≤ 50 m ³/h, to avoid damaging the micro positive pressure inside the cabinet;
Independent air duct: shall not be mixed with acid mist or biological waste gas for discharge;
Anti reflux device: Install a check valve to prevent backflow of exhaust gas during shutdown.
A better solution is to use a self circulating ventilation module with activated carbon filtration (such as some smart cabinets integrating VOC adsorption units), which not only avoids external energy consumption but also controls internal concentration. In short, whether to exhaust should be based on risk assessment rather than a one size fits all approach, in order to balance safety and energy efficiency.
