Handheld moisture tester: making "moisture" visible, tangible, and accurately measured

At the grain purchase site, grain vendors and farmers often argue over the difference in moisture content between "a few grains of rice"; In a wood processing plant, a dry wooden board may have a hidden moisture content of 18% inside, causing furniture to crack and deform; In the chemical tank area, operators need to determine within one minute whether diesel exceeds the standard due to water ingress to avoid catalyst poisoning. The common solution for these scenarios is a palm sized, less than 1kg "magic box" - a handheld moisture tester. It compresses several hours of experiments that originally required ovens, scales, and Karl Fischer titration tables into a three second action of "insertion button reading", becoming a "pocket measuring room" for modern industries such as agriculture, food, building materials, and energy.

1、 The technological transition from "drying method" to "second reading"

Traditional moisture determination relies on drying at 105 ℃ for weight loss, which is time-consuming, energy intensive, and sample destructive. In the 1970s, the resistance needle type instrument was first used for wood, measuring the resistance value between two needles to infer the moisture content. It is simple but susceptible to electrolyte interference. In the 1990s, high-frequency (RF) attenuation and microwave resonance technology emerged: water molecules have dielectric losses in the frequency range of 100 MHz to 2.45 GHz, and the instrument emits electromagnetic waves to detect energy attenuation or resonance peak shift, which can be used to convert water content. This process does not require heating or chemical reagents, and has zero damage to the sample, laying the foundation for "online, handheld, and instant". In the 21st century, chip computing power and temperature compensation algorithms have greatly improved, and the repeatability accuracy of handheld devices has jumped from ± 2% FS to ± 0.5% FS, with a response time of less than 100 ms, truly achieving "second level" detection.

2、 Mainstream technology route: Each of the four principles demonstrates its own unique abilities

Resistance pin type: Two stainless steel electrodes are inserted into the material, utilizing the linear relationship between moisture and resistance, with low cost (<300 yuan), suitable for fiber materials such as wood, paper, tobacco, etc. The representative model GM605 has an accuracy of ± 1% and displays results in 1 second.

2. High frequency capacitive type: detects changes in dielectric constant through a 50 MHz high-frequency electric field, without the need to puncture the sample, suitable for grains, seed cotton, and pellet feed, with a repeatability accuracy of ± 0.5%, and can penetrate a depth of 50 mm.

3. Microwave resonance type: Based on the Q value change of the 2.45 GHz resonant cavity, it can measure powders, slurries, and block materials. The representative model MS1204Poke has a range of 0-100% and is explosion-proof Ex ia IIC T5. The detection can be completed in 3 seconds.

4. Near infrared reflection type: Calculate moisture content based on the difference in reflectivity between 940 nm and 1450 nm dual bands, non-contact, non consumable, suitable for textile fabrics, tablets, and food, with an accuracy of ± 0.3% and a response of<1 second.

3、 Structural disassembly: A handheld device with all five organs

1. Range matching: High moisture fruits with a range of 60% to 90% require the use of a special curve in the 90% range; Low moisture plastic particles<0.1% require a 10 ppm level trace instrument.

2. Temperature compensation: Microwave type with built-in Pt100 temperature probe, automatically corrected from -20 ℃ to 85 ℃; Capacitive type requires manual input of ambient temperature, with an error of<0.1%/℃.

3. Calibration method: ① Drying method (constant weight at 105 ℃); ② Karl Fischer method (liquid sample); ③ Standard salt solution (activity conversion). Suggest recalibrating with on-site samples every 3 months, and correcting the curve if the deviation is greater than ± 1%.

4. Probe maintenance: After each measurement, wipe the probe with an alcohol swab to prevent electrolyte residue; Microwave type avoids metal collision and prevents deformation of the resonant cavity.

From resistor insertion to microwave resonance, from single machine reading to cloud interconnection, the handheld moisture tester has undergone 50 years of technological iteration, transforming the invisible and intangible key indicator of "moisture" into a numerical symbol for "second reading".
