Electric hot isostatic press is an advanced forming technology that achieves material densification through high temperature, high pressure, and inert gas environment. It is widely used in aerospace, additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, and other fields. The process results are influenced by multiple factors, and a systematic analysis will be conducted from the aspects of process parameters, material characteristics, equipment performance, and operating environment.
1、 The influence of process parameters
1. Temperature control
-Heating rate: Heating too quickly can lead to stress concentration inside the material, resulting in cracks or delamination; Slow heating prolongs the cycle and reduces efficiency.
-Temperature uniformity: Excessive temperature difference inside the furnace can cause uneven material organization, such as imbalanced distribution of reinforcing phases in metal matrix composites.
-Insulation time: Insufficient diffusion and difficulty in eliminating pores when time is not sufficient; If it is too long, it may lead to grain coarsening and reduce mechanical properties.
2. Pressure control
-Pressure mode: Constant pressure mode is suitable for uniform densification, while gradient pressure can reduce deformation of thin-walled parts.
-Pressure level: If the pressure is too low, it cannot effectively close the pores, and if it is too high, it may crush the mold or cause abnormal material flow.
-Boosting rate: Rapid boosting can easily cause gas retention defects, while slow boosting may introduce oxidation risks.
3. Holding time and cooling rate
-Insufficient holding time can lead to residual pores, while prolonged holding time increases energy consumption; A cooling rate that is too fast may cause thermal stress, while a cooling rate that is too slow can reduce production efficiency.
2、 The influence of material properties
1. Characteristics of powder raw materials
-Particle size distribution: Both large and small particle sizes can affect densification behavior, and wide distribution powders can easily form arch bridge effects, leading to residual pores.
-Powder shape: Spherical powder has good flowability, but irregularly shaped powder may increase strength through mechanical interlocking.
-Surface oxygen content: Highly active powders are prone to oxidation and require strict control of the atmosphere or the use of encapsulation techniques.
2. Properties of the matrix material
-Thermal expansion coefficient: When the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the mold and the substrate material is too large, peeling or cracking may occur during the cooling process.
-Phase transition behavior: The phase transition of materials at high temperatures (such as alloy solidification or ceramic sintering) directly affects the densification path and final properties.
3. Adhesive and lubricant
-Excessive binder content can hinder particle rearrangement, while insufficient content can lead to insufficient strength of the green body; Residual lubricants may form impurity defects.
3、 The impact of equipment performance
1. Heating system
-Heating method: Resistance heating has better uniformity than induction heating, but the latter is more suitable for rapid local heating.
-Temperature control accuracy: When the temperature fluctuation exceeds ± 5 ℃, it may significantly affect the material structure (such as the stability of titanium alloy β phase).
2. Pressure transmission system
-Gas medium: Argon is a commonly used medium, but highly active materials require nitrogen or vacuum environment.
-Sealing performance: Leakage can lead to insufficient pressure or atmosphere pollution, such as oxygen infiltration causing metal oxidation.
3. Mold design
-Material selection: Graphite molds have good thermal conductivity but are prone to oxidation, while metal molds have high strength but poor thermal matching.
-Structural complexity: The corners or thin walls of complex cavities are prone to pressure transmission hysteresis, resulting in uneven density.
4、 Operation and environmental factors
1. Loading method
-When the powder filling density is uneven or the loading amount exceeds the mold capacity, it will cause local compaction differences.
-Workpieces stacked in multiple layers should reserve expansion gaps to avoid adhesion or deformation.
2. Atmosphere control
-The oxygen content should be below 10ppm to prevent metal oxidation, and a high dew point temperature may cause water vapor corrosion.
-Dynamic atmosphere circulation can reduce the deposition of volatile substances, but excessive flow rate may carry away heat.
3. Post processing technology
-If the mold residue is not cleaned up in a timely manner, it may affect the purity of subsequent batches.
-Improper heat treatment or mechanical processing can introduce secondary defects, offsetting the advantages of hot isostatic pressing.
5、 Typical defects and regulatory strategies
1. Pore residue: Improvement can be achieved by optimizing the temperature pressure coupling curve (such as high-temperature softening followed by high-pressure densification) or extending the holding time.
2. Cracks and delamination: Control cooling rate (such as furnace cooling), optimize mold thermal matching, or add intermediate transition layers.
3. Surface oxidation: Vacuum packaging technology or coating with anti-oxidation coating (such as molybdenum foil) is used.
4. Dimensional distortion: Predict deformation through finite element simulation, adjust mold design or apply anti deformation compensation.
