X-ray Testing: Core Principles and Applications
Date: 2025-11-25Read: 1
1、 Core working principle: "Penetrating+Imaging" to find defects
  X-ray inspectionThe essence of it is to use the strong penetrability of X-rays and the absorption differences of different substances to achieve visual detection of internal defects in workpieces. The principle is similar to medical X-rays, and the specific steps are as follows:
Emission of X-rays: The equipment generates high-energy X-rays that penetrate the workpiece to be inspected (such as pipelines, welds, castings, etc.);
Absorption difference: The intact metal and defects (such as cracks, pores, and slag inclusions) inside the workpiece have different absorption abilities for X-rays - the metal absorbs more, while the defects (mostly air or impurities) absorb less;
Imaging record: Penetrating X-rays are irradiated onto imaging media (such as film, digital detectors), forming a contrasting image of light and dark. Defective areas appear as "bright spots/lines" due to the high penetration of X-rays, while intact areas appear as "dark areas";
Defect judgment: By analyzing the brightness distribution of the image, the position, size, and shape of internal defects in the workpiece can be accurately identified.
Core logic: X-rays "see through" the workpiece, and defects leave recognizable traces on the image due to the low absorption of radiation.
2、 Main application scenarios: The "golden eyes" of industrial testing
  X-ray inspectionMainly used for internal quality inspection of metal workpieces, especially suitable for detecting internal defects that cannot be touched by the naked eye. Common application areas include:
Weld seam inspection: for welding parts of pipelines, pressure vessels, and steel structures, check for welding defects such as cracks, incomplete penetration, and slag inclusion;
Casting/forging inspection: such as automotive parts, mechanical components, aerospace castings, to investigate production defects such as internal porosity, shrinkage porosity, inclusions, etc;
Pipe/plate inspection: such as seamless steel pipes and boiler steel plates, to detect issues such as uneven internal wall thickness, cracks, and delamination;
Electronic component testing: such as semiconductor chips and electronic packages, detecting internal soldering defects, packaging defects, etc. (requiring low-energy X-rays).
Core application value: To avoid the breakage and leakage of workpieces during use due to internal defects, ensure the safe operation of equipment (such as pressure vessels and aviation components), and meet product quality standards.
