As a key laboratory equipment, the ultrapure water machine must strictly follow the specifications for daily use to ensure stable water quality, extended equipment life, and reliable experimental results. The following will explain the three core aspects of water intake techniques, Standby mode management, and bacterial prevention and control.
1、 Water collection technique: precise operation to avoid pollution
Preparation before water intake
After turning on the device, discharge the initial water flow for 1-2 minutes to remove any residual water or microorganisms that may exist in the pipeline. If the equipment is not used for a long time (more than 48 hours), it should be discharged for at least 5 minutes and the water quality monitoring data should be observed (resistivity ≥ 18.2M Ω· cm is qualified).
Water intake process control
Flow rate adjustment: Adjust the water outlet speed according to the container capacity to avoid secondary pollution caused by high-speed water splashing. For example, when using 1L of ultrapure water, it is recommended to control the flow rate within 500mL/min.
Container selection: Priority should be given to using polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE) containers with lids, and avoid using glass containers (which may release metal ions). Before taking water, rinse the container with ultrapure water three times to reduce the introduction of impurities.
Staged water intake: If high-purity water is required (such as for HPLC analysis), a portion of RO reverse osmosis water can be used to flush the pipeline first, and then switched to ultrapure water mode for water intake to reduce TOC (total organic carbon) content.
2、 Standby mode management: energy conservation and water quality balance
Mode selection logic
After the device enters Standby mode, the purification column still maintains microfluidic circulation to prevent microbial growth. Suggest setting the mode according to the frequency of use:
High frequency use (≥ 3 times a day): Maintain Standby mode to reduce equipment damage caused by repeated startup.
Low frequency use (≤ 1 time per day): Turn off the device power, but start it once a week and drain the pipeline water to avoid the purification column from failing due to long-term standing.
Parameter monitoring
Regularly check the water quality data in Standby mode. If the resistivity decreases by more than 10% or the TOC value abnormally increases (>5ppb), the purification column should be replaced immediately or the integrity of the reverse osmosis membrane should be checked.
3、 Bacterial Prevention and Control: Multi level Barrier Strategy
physical barrier
Install a terminal ultraviolet sterilizer (UV lamp) to sterilize the effluent in real-time, ensuring that the total bacterial count is less than 1 CFU/mL.
Regularly replace the pre filter element (every 3-6 months) to prevent large particles from clogging the pipeline and provide a breeding environment for microorganisms.
Chemical barrier
Add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (H ₂ O ₂, concentration ≤ 0.1%) to the water storage tank to inhibit bacterial growth. However, it should be noted that the pipeline should be flushed after addition to avoid residual effects on the experiment.
Operating Specifications
Avoid direct contact with the water outlet with your hands and wear sterile gloves if necessary.
Disinfect the exterior of the equipment with 75% alcohol every month, with a focus on cleaning high-frequency contact areas such as water intake buttons and interfaces.
Regularly (every 6 months) disinfect the pipeline, rinse with a 1% peracetic acid solution for 30 minutes, and then rinse with ultrapure water until neutral.
4、 Maintenance and recording
Establish equipment usage logs to record water intake time, water quality data, filter replacement cycle, and disinfection operations. If any abnormal water quality is found (such as odor or turbidity), immediately stop using and contact an engineer for maintenance. Through standardized operation and regular maintenance, the ultra pure water machine can ensure long-term stable operation, providing reliable water quality assurance for experiments.
