In the past three years, although the number of complaints and reports about odors has decreased year by year, the proportion of complaints and reports to the total has steadily increased, making it one of the most severe environmental problems currently complained about by the public.

The most common complaints about odors in the garbage disposal industry are related to garbage collection and stacking (62%), followed by landfill (22%), garbage incineration (9%), and garbage transportation (7%). Most complaints about garbage collection and disposal are caused by delayed removal of household waste in residential areas and surrounding areas; Garbage transfer stations are often located in densely populated urban areas, and complaints are mainly caused by unorganized emissions of odorous gases that have not been effectively collected; Complaints about landfill odors/odors are mainly caused by improper landfill operations, landfill gas, and leachate treatment; Complaints about foul odors/odors from garbage incineration are mainly caused by insufficient incineration, high concentration of foul odors from incineration gas, and inadequate incineration treatment technology. In addition, temperature changes can cause fluctuations in the number of complaints. In summer (June August), the number of complaints about garbage disposal is more than 60% higher than in winter (December February). At higher temperatures, the easily degradable components in garbage decompose a large amount of odorous substances and release them, leading to a rapid increase in complaints.

The odor pollution caused by the garbage disposal industry is mainly composed of nitrogen-containing compounds, sulfides, hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, and oxygen-containing organic compounds such as ketones, alcohols, aldehydes, and phenols. According to the "Emission Standards for Odor Pollutants" (GB 14554-93) issued by China, eight types of odor substances that need to be controlled are hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), methyl sulfide ((CH3) 2S), dimethyl disulfide ((CH3) 2S2), carbon disulfide (CS2), ammonia (NH3), sanjia amine (CH3) 3N), and styrene (AR-CH=CH2).

With years of accumulated research and development experience and advanced technology in the field of environmental monitoring, various odor monitoring instruments have been launched. Through the selection of high-precision sensors from domestic and foreign brands, 24-hour online monitoring of multiple odor indicators in garbage transfer stations, landfills, and air environments can be achieved. Portable on-site detection has fast response speed and stable operation, which can effectively meet the daily environmental monitoring of garbage stations, breeding farms, chemical parks, pharmaceutical factories, etc., and has been well received by cooperative units.
