The maintenance of graphite sintering molds is particularly important
Date: 2025-10-23Read: 33
Graphite sintering moldIt is a mold commonly used in metal sintering processes for manufacturing high-strength and high-precision metal parts. The tool is made by filling metal powder into a mold, and then applying high temperature and high pressure for sintering, so that the metal powder particles are combined into dense metal parts. It has good thermal conductivity and high temperature stability, and can withstand the effects of high temperature and high pressure, ensuring that the metal powder undergoes uniform pyrolysis and sintering during the sintering process, forming high-quality parts.
Here isGraphite sintering moldDetailed maintenance methods:
1、 Preparation and inspection before use
Appearance inspection:
Carefully inspect the surface of the mold for mechanical damage such as cracks, notches, scratches, and deformations. Molds with obvious defects should be repaired or scrapped to avoid workpiece scrap or equipment damage caused by breakage during use.
Cleaning treatment:
Use a soft bristled brush or compressed air to remove graphite dust and impurities from the surface of the mold.
If the mold has been used for sintering different materials, it needs to be wiped with anhydrous ethanol or acetone to remove residues and prevent cross contamination.
It is strictly prohibited to clean with water. Graphite is porous and will produce steam at high temperatures after absorbing water, leading to cracking.
Pre drying (after s uses or moisture exposure):
Place the mold in a low-temperature oven and bake at 50-100 ° C for 2-4 hours to remove adsorbed moisture and volatile substances, preventing the formation of bubbles or explosions at high temperatures.
Preheating (important):
Before loading into the sintering furnace, a stepped preheating should be carried out (such as room temperature → 300 ° C → 600 ° C → 800 ° C), and the temperature should be slowly increased (recommended ≤ 5 ° C/min) to avoid cracking caused by thermal stress concentration.
The preheating process also helps to further eliminate adsorbed gases.
2、 Precautions during use
Ensure a protective atmosphere:
It must be used in a vacuum or high-purity inert gas (such as Ar, N ₂) environment to prevent graphite from oxidizing and burning at high temperatures (>400 ° C).
Regularly check the sealing of the gas path to ensure that the oxygen content in the furnace meets the standard (usually<10 ppm).
Control the heating/cooling rate:
Strictly follow the process specifications, avoid rapid heating and rapid cooling, reduce thermal stress, and prevent mold cracking.
It is recommended to control the heating and cooling rate within 3-5 ° C/min, especially in the 300-800 ° C range (graphite oxidation sensitive area).
Preventing mechanical impact:
When loading and unloading molds and workpieces, handle them gently to avoid collisions, falls, or impacts.
The workpiece should be loaded smoothly to avoid uneven loading or excessive local stress.
Avoid direct contact with active metals (if applicable):
Some active metals (such as Ti, Zr, B, etc.) may react with graphite at high temperatures to form carbides. If necessary, coatings (such as BN boron nitride) or isolation materials can be used.
3、 Cleaning and maintenance after use
Cool to safe temperature:
After sintering is completed, the mold must be slowly cooled to below 200 ° C in the furnace before it can be removed. It is strictly prohibited to remove it from the furnace at high temperatures.
Remove residues:
Gently remove sintering residue, powder, or adhesions from the mold cavity using a soft bristled brush, wooden chip, or plastic scraper.
It is strictly prohibited to use metal hard objects to scrape, in order to avoid damaging the surface of the mold or causing micro cracks.
Deep cleaning (regular):
For molds with severe carbon deposition or pollution, hydrogen reduction or plasma cleaning (professional equipment) can be used.
Alternatively, soak in a specialized graphite cleaning agent and then wipe with ethanol.
After cleaning, it must be thoroughly dried.
Inspection and repair:
Check the condition of the mold after each use, record the number of uses and damage situation.
For minor scratches or burrs, use fine sandpaper (such as 1000 # or above) to gently polish and then clean.
Serious damage should be sent to a professional manufacturer for repair or replacement.
4、 Long term storage and maintenance
Thoroughly clean and dry:
Before storage, ensure that the mold is clean, dry, and free of residue.
Moisture and dust prevention:
Store in a dry, ventilated, and clean environment with a relative humidity of less than 60%.
It is best to wrap it with a dust cover or plastic bag to prevent dust and moisture from being adsorbed.
Avoid squeezing and collision:
Store separately or use dedicated mold racks to avoid stacking, compression, or collision with each other.
Stay away from corrosive gases:
Avoid storing together with chemicals such as acids, bases, and strong oxidants.
