The difference between flammable storage cabinets and toxic storage cabinets
Date: 2025-07-07Read: 1

The core difference between these two types of safety cabinets is that they target different hazardous properties, are designed to store different hazardous chemicals, and have significant differences in structure, function, and certification standards:

Summary of core differences:

Toxic goods cabinet: mainly to prevent chemical toxicity and harm to human health (inhalation, skin contact, ingestion, etc.), with a focus on sealing, ventilation (control), and personnel protection.

Flammable goods cabinet: mainly to prevent the combustion and explosion hazards of chemicals, with a focus on fire prevention, explosion prevention, pressure relief, and limiting the spread of fire.

Do not mix: Flammable materials must not be stored in the hazardous material cabinet, nor should toxic materials be stored in the flammable material cabinet. This violates safety design principles and greatly increases the risk of accidents.

Chemical properties are complex: many chemicals may have both toxicity and flammability (such as benzene and methanol). When storing such chemicals:

Priority should be given to its main hazardous properties: if flammability is its significant and most urgent hazard (low flash point), it should be stored in a flammable cabinet.

Strictly follow SDS: it is necessary to refer to the safety technical manual of the chemical, and its Part 7 "Operation, Disposal, and Storage" will clearly specify the storage requirements.

Consider compatibility: Even if stored in a flammable cabinet, ensure that the chemicals stored in the cabinet are compatible and will not cause dangerous reactions.

Ventilation considerations: For flammable and hazardous materials stored in flammable cabinets, toxicity protection mainly relies on the ventilation hood during operation, personal protective equipment, and limited natural ventilation of the flammable cabinet itself. If the toxicity risk is high, a specially designed cabinet that meets both fire and toxic ventilation requirements may be needed, but this is usually very expensive and complex.

Selection criteria: The fundamental basis for choosing which cabinet to use is the hazard classification of chemicals and the requirements of safety technical specifications.

Simply put:

Afraid of poisoning people, leaking and polluting the environment? Use a toxic substance cabinet (with emphasis on sealing and ventilation).

Afraid of fire or explosion? Use flammable material cabinets (with emphasis on fire-resistant structures, pressure relief, electrostatic grounding, and natural ventilation openings).

It is necessary to strictly select the correct safe storage cabinet based on the hazardous characteristics of the specific chemicals stored, and comply with relevant safety operating procedures and local regulations.
