Analysis of the causes of measurement deviation in handheld laser dust particle counter
Date: 2025-08-25Read: 2
Handheld laser dust particle counters are widely used in the field of cleanliness detection due to their portability and real-time monitoring capabilities. However, in practical use, there are often situations where the measured values do not match expectations. This error is not caused by a single factor, but is the result of the combined effects of instrument characteristics, environmental interference, operating standards, and the complexity of the measured object. The following are the key factors and their mechanisms that affect the accuracy of measurements:
1、 The inherent limitations of the optical system of handheld laser dust particle counter
1. Particle size misjudgment caused by scattering angle dependence
According to the Mie scattering theory, the scattering intensity of laser by particles with different diameters exhibits a nonlinear relationship, and is significantly affected by the wavelength of the incident light and the refractive index of the particles. When there are non spherical particles (such as fibrous pollutants) in the sample, the traditional spherical assumption model will produce systematic errors, manifested as deviations between the actual particle size distribution and the displayed results. For example, sheet-like silicate crystals may trigger false counting in multiple channels.
2. Signal loss caused by edge effects
The microfluidic channel with a flow cell structure exhibits laminar distribution characteristics, and particles in the low-speed zone near the wall cannot enter the detection area. Research has shown that when the flow rate is below the critical value, insufficient wall shear force can lead to an increase in the sedimentation rate of particles with a diameter greater than 5 μ m, resulting in a lower count of large particles. Regularly calibrating the flow rate curve can improve this phenomenon.
3. Spectral overlap between dispersed phases
The composite scattering spectra generated by the mixing of multiple substances may experience cross interference. The common lactose powder mist and lubricant droplets in the pharmaceutical workshop produce similar signal amplitudes at the same scattering angle, leading to incorrect component identification. The use of multi wavelength laser sources helps distinguish particles with different chemical compositions.
2、 Defects in the fluid dynamics design of handheld laser dust particle counter
1. Stability of spontaneous electric field disturbance sampling
The turbulence generated by the internal fan of the equipment will cause changes in the natural charge distribution in the air, and charged particles will undergo non-uniform deposition under the action of Coulomb force. Experiments have shown that when the relative humidity exceeds 60%, electrostatic effects can increase the fluctuation amplitude of PM2.5 counts, and a static removal device needs to be configured to stabilize readings.
2. Concentration stratification caused by inertial impact
During the rapid suction process, particles with significant density differences exhibit a gradient distribution. Heavier metal particles tend to settle towards the bottom of the pipeline, while lightweight polymer fibers gather at the center of the top airflow. The stratification effect results in instantaneous concentration differences of more than three times at different height points within the same space.
3. Cross contamination caused by memory effect
The residual particles after the previous high concentration measurement will slowly release to form false background values. When continuously testing areas of different cleanliness levels, if sufficient zeroing procedures are not performed, residual historical data may lead to false high readings in subsequent low dust environments. Suggest using nitrogen purging for deep cleaning.
3、 The dynamic coupling effect of environmental parameters on handheld laser dust particle counter
1. The combined effect of temperature and humidity changes air viscosity
The ideal gas state equation fails here, and the decrease in aerodynamic viscosity under high temperature and high humidity conditions intensifies the Brownian motion of particles, resulting in a deviation in the final settling velocity calculated by Stokes' law. The revised Cunningham sliding correction coefficient needs to be included in the algorithm compensation module.
2. Calibration curve of distorted flow rate due to pressure fluctuations
For every 100 meters increase in altitude, the atmospheric pressure decreases by about 1 kPa, which directly leads to a decrease in the volumetric flow rate reading of the mass flowmeter. If pressure compensation is not carried out when used in high-altitude areas, the actual sampling volume may be 20% lower than the set value, resulting in an underestimation of the number of particles per unit volume.
3. Vibration noise introduces electronic noise base
The mechanical vibration generated by handheld operation is transmitted to the photodetector, forming a frequency specific interference current. The lock-in amplifier technology can effectively extract weak real signals and suppress the crosstalk of power frequency and its harmonic components.
4、 Uncontrollable variables manually operated by handheld laser dust particle counter
1. Inadequate implementation of the principle of constant velocity sampling
When the sampling port is oriented towards the airflow direction, a sudden change in pressure gradient occurs, while reverse sampling results in a lack of representativeness due to insufficient negative pressure. The ISO standard stipulates that the axis of the sampling head should be kept at a 45 ° angle to the horizontal plane, and the inlet Reynolds number should be ensured to be in the laminar flow zone to ensure isotropic collection efficiency.
2. Incorrect selection of pore size for pre filtration membrane
If the aperture of the pre filter set up to protect the sensor is too small, it will trap large particles that should have been included; Excessive aperture may also cause sensor blockage. The key is to choose a graded pre filtration combination that matches the cutting point, such as selecting a 10 μ m pre filtration membrane for ISO Class 5 environment.
3. Lack of traceability of calibration source
Using self-made standard particle liquid instead of NIST certified RM8190 standard aerosol for calibration may result in reference benchmark deviation due to differences in volatility and coagulation characteristics. The calibration certificate issued by a third-party metrology institute is the legal basis for the validity of the results.
