Three coordinate measuring machine selection guide
Date: 2025-09-02Read: 1

1. Clearly define measurement requirements

-Travel range: Select based on the maximum size of the tested workpiece. It is necessary to consider whether the entire workpiece can be placed in the measuring machine for normal measurement, and sufficient measurement space should be reserved. At the same time, for fixed measuring heads, the length of the star shaped probe group and extension rod should be added according to the measurement requirements.

-Accuracy requirement: Select according to 1/3 of the maximum allowable deviation of the product. If the test results need to be used as the basis for supplier assessment, the principle of 1/5 or 1/10 can be considered. Compare the measurement error given by the coordinate measuring machine with the tolerance of the measured characteristic to preliminarily determine whether its accuracy meets the requirements. For precision measurement, the measurement error is usually within 10% to 20% of the dimensional tolerance zone of the measured workpiece.

-Load bearing requirement: Generally, the load-bearing capacity of the machine should be greater than the load-bearing capacity required by the tested workpiece.

-Measurement type: Trigger measurement is suitable for single point measurement; Scanning measurement is suitable for quickly obtaining a large number of data points on the surface of an object; Non contact measurement has the advantage of not damaging the surface of the measured object and can be selected according to the characteristics of the measured object.

2. Evaluate the performance of the three coordinate system

-Host structure and material: The gantry structure is commonly used for measuring large workpieces, which has the characteristics of high accuracy and convenient measurement. It can effectively complete the measurement of large parts and the scanning of complex shapes and free-form surfaces. In terms of material, choosing a host frame with uniform material, such as using granite rails with low thermal expansion coefficient, can make the machine have good temperature adaptability and resistance to aging deformation; The integrated casting of key components can improve machine accuracy and motion stability.

-Moving parts and transmission system: DC servo drive+enhanced synchronous belt should be used for each moving axis to ensure the smoothness of the large stroke measuring machine's movement and the accuracy of positioning. The Z-axis can adopt flexible balance system or pneumatic balance technology to reduce frictional resistance and improve motion accuracy.

-Measurement system: High precision grating ruler is an important measuring component. For example, the three coordinate measuring machine in China uses high-resolution metal grating ruler to ensure high precision and long-term stability during use.

3. Consider the functionality of the measurement software

-Basic measurement function: It should have comprehensive measurement functions, such as dimension measurement, shape and position tolerance evaluation, etc., which can meet the measurement needs of various types of workpieces.

-CAD Data Interface: Supports importing CAD files in various formats, such as IGES, STEP, etc., for easy comparison and analysis with design data. This is particularly important for users who need to perform reverse engineering or integrate with CAD/CAM systems.

-Special measurement function: For special workpieces such as thin-walled parts, turbine blades, spiral compressor rotors, gears, etc., it has corresponding professional measurement functions. For example, the thin-walled part measurement function should support multiple automatic feature types of thin-walled parts.

-Measurement report generation: Able to generate compliant and intuitive measurement reports, meeting the needs of users at different levels for measurement reports. The report format should include multiple default types, such as 3D PDF format reports and customized reports.

4. Consider the degree of automation

-Manual and automatic: If you only need to detect workpieces with relatively simple geometric quantities and tolerances, or measure various small batches of different workpieces, you can choose the manual type; If it is necessary to detect a large quantity of identical workpieces or require high accuracy, an automatic type directly controlled by a computer should be selected.

5. Evaluate the brand and after-sales service

-Brand awareness: Choose brands with high market recognition, which usually have more reliable guarantees in product quality, technology research and development, and after-sales service.

-After sales service: including technical support, maintenance, training, etc. Timely and effective after-sales service can ensure the long-term stable operation of equipment, reduce downtime, and lower usage costs. Understand whether the supplier has a localized technical service team and a comprehensive service network, and whether they can provide quick response and professional technical support.

Localized production and supply chain management of domestic brands reduce production and operating costs, making product prices more competitive and performance equally reliable, providing a cost-effective option. Due to the varying measurement needs in different industries and fields, the development and application of domestically produced coordinate measuring machines can also be customized and improved according to specific circumstances. Domestic brands can also respond to customer needs more quickly and provide timely after-sales service.

6. Consider budget and cost-effectiveness

-Budget range: Clearly define your budget, as the price of a coordinate measuring machine varies greatly depending on the brand, functionality, and accuracy. On the premise of meeting measurement needs, choose cost-effective equipment to avoid blindly pursuing high configurations and exceeding budgets.

-Operating costs: In addition to purchasing costs, equipment operating costs such as energy consumption, maintenance costs, and replacement costs of vulnerable parts also need to be considered.
