Safety operating procedures and precise operation guide for grinding machine
Date: 2025-09-25Read: 1
As a key equipment for material testing (such as concrete core samples and rock samples) pre-treatment, the standardization of operation of the grinding machine directly affects the processing quality of the specimens, the accuracy of the testing data, and the safety of the equipment and personnel. The following are the core operating procedures for a typical double end face grinding machine.

  1、 Preparation before operation
1. Equipment inspection: Before operation, it is necessary to check:
① Mechanical part: Ensure that all fastening bolts are not loose, and that the sliding surfaces of guide rails, screws, etc. are clean and lubricated with an appropriate amount of oil.
② Electrical part: Confirm that the power cord connectors are secure and the equipment must be reliably grounded. The turning direction of the jog test grinding head must be consistent with the indicated arrow direction, and reverse rotation is strictly prohibited, otherwise it will damage the grinding disc.
③ Cooling system: Connect the cooling water pipe and open the valve to check if the water flow is sufficient and unobstructed.
④ Grinding wheel and fixture: Check whether the diamond grinding wheel has cracks or damage, and whether the fixture is flexible, reliable, and free of residue.
2. Sample clamping: Place the sample (such as a concrete core sample) smoothly into the fixture, ensuring that it is firmly clamped and pressed against the fixture reference surface to prevent loosening during grinding. Before clamping, it is advisable to rinse the surface of the fixture and sample thoroughly to prevent residual substances from affecting the grinding accuracy.
  2、 Operation process
1. Power on and positioning:
① First, connect the power and water sources.
② Withdraw the two grinding heads to a safe position to ensure that the sample does not collide with the grinding wheel during the reciprocating motion of the workbench.
③ Install protective covers to prevent coolant splashing and debris flying out.
2. Startup and Grinding:
① Start the grinding head motor first and confirm that it is turning correctly and running smoothly.
② Restart the workbench and start its reciprocating motion.
③ Perform manual or automatic feeding:
Manual feed: Slowly rotate the handwheel to gradually approach the sample for grinding. The feed rate should be small each time (it is recommended that the feed rate should not exceed 1mm), and be careful not to rush forward.
Automatic feed: Push the handle to the automatic position. The equipment will intermittently feed according to the set feed rate (such as 0.04mm each time). It is strictly prohibited to switch to manual feed during automatic grinding to avoid damaging the equipment.
3. Shutdown upon completion:
① After grinding, the worktable should be stopped first, then the grinding head should be moved out of the safe distance, and finally the grinding head motor should be turned off. Do not stop grinding the head first, otherwise it may scratch the surface of the already ground sample.
② Turn off the main power and water source valves.
  3、 Safety precautions
1. Protection is crucial: protective covers must be installed during operation, and care must be taken to avoid clothing, gloves, and other moving parts getting caught up.
2. Strictly prevent electric shock: The electrical parts of the equipment use safe voltage, but still need to ensure good grounding. The operating area ground should be kept dry to prevent the risk of water and electricity interweaving.
3. Stop immediately upon abnormality: If abnormal noise is heard or severe equipment vibration is found during the grinding process, the power should be immediately cut off and the machine should be stopped for inspection. Only after troubleshooting can it continue to be used.
4. Handle grinding wheels with caution: Diamond grinding wheels have a brittle texture and are strictly prohibited from being struck or collided. After replacing the grinding wheel with a new one, it is sometimes necessary to use a regular corundum grinding wheel for "opening" treatment to make it sharper.
  4、 Maintenance and upkeep
1. Daily maintenance: After daily work, it is necessary to promptly clean the residue and dirt on the workbench, wipe off water stains, and reapply lubricating oil to moving parts such as guide rails and screws to prevent rust.
2. Regular inspection: Regularly check the reliability of electrical components such as travel switches and AC contactors. When the equipment is not in use for a long time, it should be cleaned and important surfaces should be coated with rust proof oil and covered with dust covers.
Strictly following the above operating procedures can not only obtain high-quality specimens that are flat, smooth, and meet specification requirements (such as flatness tolerance ± 0.05mm), but also effectively ensure personal safety and significantly extend the service life of the grinding machine.
