Overview of Basic Principles and Applications of Upright Metallographic Microscope
Date: 2025-09-15Read: 1
The upright metallographic microscope is a key equipment used in the field of materials science to observe the microstructure of metal and non-metal materials. Its core principle is based on optical reflection imaging and precision mechanical control, combined with modern optoelectronic technology to achieve high-resolution analysis.
Basic Principles
The upright metallographic microscope adopts a reflective light path design, and the light emitted by the light source is focused by a condenser and vertically irradiated onto the surface of the sample. Opaque materials such as metals reflect light from their surfaces, carrying microscopic features such as grain structure and phase interfaces. The light enters the objective lens and is magnified for the first time to form an inverted real image; The real image is magnified twice through the eyepiece and ultimately forms a clear virtual image on the observer's retina. For example, the Olympus upright metallographic microscope achieves nanometer level resolution by using a far chromatic aberration correction optical system and a long-distance flat field achromatic objective lens, which can clearly display grain size, phase distribution, and defect characteristics. Its lighting system supports both transmission and reflection modes, adapting to different sample characteristics.
Application field
Material organization analysis: In the metallurgical industry, it is used to identify the phase composition (ferrite, austenite, etc.), grain size, and distribution of non-metallic inclusions of metal materials (such as steel, alloys), and evaluate the heat treatment effect. For example, by observing the martensitic structure of quenched steel through the MIT300/500 series microscope, process parameters can be optimized.
Quality control: In semiconductor manufacturing, detect surface defects on silicon chips and ensure uniformity of thin film thickness; In the electronics industry, analyze the quality of printed circuit board coatings to ensure conductivity.
Failure analysis: For metal fracture parts, the cause of fracture can be traced by observing the fracture morphology (such as dimples and cleavage planes) and crack propagation path. For example, in the failure analysis of aviation materials, the upright microscope can locate the source of fatigue cracks.
Research education: University laboratories use it to conduct basic research in materials science, such as observing metal phase transition processes, nano material morphology, and assisting in the development of new materials.
technical advantage
The upright design facilitates the operation of large samples and, when combined with various observation modes such as bright field, dark field, polarization, and DIC (differential interference contrast), can meet the needs of complex surface structure analysis. Some models integrate image acquisition systems that support real-time recording and quantitative analysis, significantly improving research efficiency.
