Agilent digital multimeter measurement method
Date: 2025-12-08Read: 2
 Agilent digital multimeterFully functional, it can accurately measure commonly used electrical parameters such as voltage, current, and resistance. The following are universal and standardized measurement steps, suitable for most Agilent multimeter models:
1、 Preparation before measurement
Pen connection
Insert the red probe into the V Ω mA socket and the black probe into the COM common socket; If measuring high current (such as 10A or above), the red probe should be switched to the corresponding high current socket (such as 10A socket).
Check if the insulation layer of the probe is damaged, and if the plug and socket are firmly in contact to avoid short circuits or measurement errors.
Function Selection
Turn on the power of the multimeter, and according to the parameters to be tested, rotate the function knob to the corresponding gear:
Choose DCV for DC voltage and ACV for AC voltage;
Choose DCA for DC current and ACA for AC current;
Choose the Ω range for resistance measurement.
Range selection
Prioritize selecting the automatic range (if there is an AUTO button), and the instrument will automatically match the appropriate range;
The manual range requires estimating the value to be measured and selecting a range greater than the estimated value to prevent damage to the instrument caused by exceeding the range.
2、 Common parameter measurement steps
1. Voltage measurement (taking DC voltage as an example)
Ensure that the tested circuit is in a power-off or safe state. If measuring live circuits, attention should be paid to preventing electric shock.
Connect the red and black probes in parallel at both ends of the tested component or circuit (the positive and negative poles of the DC voltage should be distinguished, with the red probe connected to the positive pole and the black probe connected to the negative pole).
After the display screen reading stabilizes, record the value; If "OL" is displayed, it indicates that the range is too small and needs to be switched to a larger range.
AC voltage measurement does not require distinguishing between positive and negative poles, and the probes can be directly connected in parallel.
2. Current measurement
Power off operation: Disconnect the tested circuit and ensure that the circuit is in a no-load powered state.
Adjust the multimeter knob to the corresponding current level (DC/AC), and connect the red and black probes in series to the disconnected circuit.
Connect the circuit and record the value after the reading stabilizes; If measuring high current, attention should be paid to the rated current values of the probes and sockets to avoid overload.
After the measurement is completed, disconnect the circuit first, then remove the probe, and do not plug or unplug with power on.
3. Resistance measurement
Ensure that the tested component is completely powered off and disconnected from other parts of the circuit (to avoid parallel circuits affecting the measurement results).
Turn the knob to the Ω position and connect the red and black probes in parallel at both ends of the measured resistor.
Record the resistance value after the reading stabilizes; If measuring a high resistance resistor, wait a few seconds for the reading to stabilize.
It is prohibited to measure resistance in live circuits to prevent damage to the multimeter.
3、 Measurement precautions
Do not touch the metal end of the probe with your hands during measurement to avoid interference from human resistance or the risk of electric shock.
It is strictly prohibited to measure voltage with current or resistance settings, otherwise the multimeter will be directly burned out.
After the measurement is completed, turn the function knob to OFF or the highest range of ACV to extend the service life of the instrument.
When not in use for a long time, remove the internal battery to prevent battery leakage and damage to the circuit board.
