The complex and ever-changing environment of Chinese style household kitchens - high temperature, high humidity, and diffuse oil fumes, coupled with the volatile organic gases such as acetic acid (vinegar) and ethanol (cooking wine) during the cooking process, pose serious challenges to the detection accuracy and anti-interference performance of methane sensors. Traditional gas alarms often have false alarms or missed alarms (due to sensor poisoning or failure) due to insufficient anti-interference ability, which not only seriously interferes with users but also poses safety hazards. In response to this pain point, Sifang Optoelectronics has launched the four channel infrared (NDIR) methane sensor JW-05, which achieves precise monitoring of methane in complex kitchen environments with its innovative multispectral detection technology and intelligent algorithm.

Why do traditional alarm systems frequently malfunction

① Cross sensitive problem

Traditional catalytic combustion or semiconductor sensors are susceptible to interference from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ethanol and acetic acid. For example, during cooking, the volatile concentration of cooking wine (ethanol) may reach tens of thousands of ppm, which is equivalent to the lower explosive limit of methane (5% volume concentration). If the sensor cannot distinguish between the two, a false alarm will be triggered.

② Complex environmental interference

The high temperature and humidity in the kitchen, as well as the adhesion of oil stains, can lead to baseline drift of sensors, long-term stability decline, and increased risk of false alarms. In addition, aerosols generated instantaneously during frying, steaming, and other processes may obstruct the sensing part of the sensor, affecting the reliability of detection.

③ Anti silicon poisoning ability

Traditional semiconductor sensors are extremely sensitive to silicides contained in kitchen fumes. Once silicides are adsorbed on the surface of sensors, they irreversibly alter their catalytic active sites or the microstructure of semiconductor materials, reducing the sensitivity of sensors to changes in methane concentration and increasing the risk of false positives.

High sensitivity: using high-precision detectors and adaptive gain technology, the detection limit can reach 100ppm, and early warning can be issued in the early stage of gas leakage;

Full range accuracy: The range covers 0-100% LEL (5% volume concentration), which can stably output data even in high concentration methane or mixed gas environments, avoiding sensor saturation failure.
