Key influencing factors on the measurement accuracy of digital photoelastic instrument
Date: 2025-09-22Read: 0
The digital photoelastic instrument, as an important tool for modern mechanical testing, achieves stress visualization analysis by capturing the photoelastic effect of materials under stress state. Its measurement accuracy is affected by multidimensional factors and requires full process control from equipment characteristics, experimental conditions to operating standards. Starting from the core elements, analyze the key variables that affect the measurement results.
1、 Optical system performance
The stability of the light source is the fundamental guarantee. The use of high brightness monochromatic LED or laser can provide narrowband coherent light, reducing stray light interference; If the power fluctuation of the light source exceeds ± 5%, it will directly lead to a decrease in stripe contrast. The quality of polarizing film determines the extinction ratio, and the residual leakage of inferior polarizing film will blur the contour line characteristics. The processing accuracy of birefringent prisms needs to be controlled at the nanometer level, and angular deviation can cause errors in determining the direction of principal stress. The resolution of CCD/CMOS sensors should match the size of the measured object, as insufficient pixel density can easily cause stripe interpolation distortion.
2、 Preparation process of test piece
The homogeneity of the model material is crucial. Epoxy resin materials require vacuum defoaming treatment, and residual bubbles with a diameter greater than 0.1mm form localized stress concentration zones. The difference in solidification shrinkage rate can lead to boundary effects, and it is recommended to use secondary pouring compensation technology. The surface roughness Ra of cutting should be less than 0.8 μ m, and microcracks caused by tool marks will become pseudo stress sources. The refractive index of the adhesive needs to match the model substrate, and misalignment exceeding 0.02 will result in interface reflection noise.
3、 Environmental control elements
A constant temperature and humidity environment is indispensable. For every 1 ℃ change in temperature, the resin material will generate an apparent stress increase of about 0.5MPa. Excessive humidity can cause swelling strain in hygroscopic materials, and the relative humidity should be controlled between 40% -60%. The anti vibration table can suppress stripe drift caused by environmental vibration, and precision experiments require vibration amplitude<5 μ m/s. Electromagnetic shielding can effectively eliminate the interference magnetic field generated by electronic devices and avoid the magnetostriction effect.
4、 Key points of operating standards
The centering accuracy of the loading device directly affects the stress distribution. When the eccentricity exceeds 1% of the specimen thickness, the proportion of bending stress significantly increases. The loading rate needs to be synchronized with the acquisition frequency, and phase lag under dynamic loading can cause stripe movement blur. The calibration plate should use standard specimens with known theoretical solutions to regularly verify the sensitivity of the system. The exposure time during image acquisition needs to balance stripe clarity and motion blur, and high-speed photography mode is suitable for impact loading scenes.
5、 Data processing algorithm
The threshold setting of the automatic recognition algorithm determines the accuracy of stripe extraction. Adaptive histogram equalization can enhance weak signal areas, but excessive enhancement can amplify noise. The Fourier transform demodulation requires the selection of an appropriate window function, and the Hanning window can effectively suppress spectral leakage. The path planning during 3D reconstruction should avoid shadow areas, and the stereo matching error should be controlled at the sub-pixel level.
To improve the measurement accuracy of digital photoelastic instruments, a systematic quality control system needs to be established, which includes equipment selection, specimen preparation, environmental control, and data acquisition to form a complete closed loop. By quantifying key parameter indicators and combining them with numerical simulation verification, it is possible to achieve an engineering application standard with stress measurement uncertainty better than 3%.
