Comparative analysis of sensor types and accuracy of explosion-proof dust detectors
Date: 2025-11-19Read: 0
Explosion proof dust detectors are the core equipment to ensure safe production in areas with explosive dust environments such as coal, metal processing, and grain storage. Its core performance - measurement accuracy, stability, and applicable scenarios - is directly determined by the sensor technology used. At present, mainstream technologies mainly include laser scattering, beta ray absorption, and charge induction, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, suitable for different scenarios.
1. Laser scattering method: a representative of high precision and real-time performance
Principle: Using a laser beam to irradiate suspended dust, the dust concentration is calculated by measuring the intensity of scattered light.
Accuracy analysis:
Advantages: It has sensitivity (up to 0.001mg/m ³) and excellent real-time response capability, which can capture instantaneous fluctuations in concentration. The measurement results are relatively controllable under the influence of dust type, color, and humidity, and can be measured for particle size distribution (PM2.5, PM10) through optical means.
Disadvantage: For low concentration measurements, background noise may introduce errors. In high humidity environments, water mist may be mistaken for dust and humidity compensation is required. The equipment cost and maintenance requirements are relatively high.
Applicable scenarios: environmental air monitoring, occupational health and safety (OELs compliance monitoring), process control that requires high-precision real-time data.
2. Beta absorption method: benchmark method and regulatory arbitrator
Principle: Use low-energy beta rays (such as C-14) to penetrate and collect dust from filter membranes, and calculate the dust mass concentration by measuring the attenuation of the radiation intensity. This is a 'weighing method'.
Accuracy analysis:
Advantages: This is the benchmark method, with the most accurate and reliable measurement results, almost unaffected by the physical and chemical properties of dust, such as color and composition. Data has legal validity and is commonly used for regulatory compliance verification and calibration of other instruments.
Disadvantage: It belongs to intermittent measurement and cannot provide real-time data (usually 1-hour mean). The system structure is complex, including moving parts such as sampling pumps and paper tapes, requiring a large amount of maintenance, and involving radioactive sources, with regulatory and licensing requirements.
Applicable scenarios: Standard comparison of environmental monitoring stations, regulatory compliance certification, scientific research, and serving as calibration benchmarks for other sensors.
3. Charge induction method: a guardian of economic durability and harsh working conditions
Principle: Measure the electrostatic charge generated by the friction between dust particles and the sensor probe during movement, thereby indirectly reflecting the dust concentration.
Accuracy analysis:
Advantages: Strong structure, no optical components, very durable, able to adapt to harsh working conditions such as high temperature, high humidity, and high concentration. Low cost and fast response speed.
Disadvantages: The measurement accuracy is relatively low, and its readings are greatly affected by dust material, flow rate, humidity, particle size, and distribution in the pipeline, requiring frequent on-site calibration. It is more suitable for trend monitoring rather than precise quantitative measurement.
Applicable scenarios: leakage monitoring of industrial bag dust collectors, process monitoring of powder conveying pipelines, and leakage alarms for high concentration dust.
Conclusion and selection suggestions
The key to choosing an explosion-proof dust detector sensor is to match the application requirements:
To pursue the highest precision and real-time performance for health protection or fine process control, laser scattering method should be chosen.
As a legal measurement or calibration standard, the beta ray absorption method must be used.
Due to limited budget, harsh working conditions, and the main purpose of trend alarm and process monitoring, the charge induction method is an economical and practical choice.
In practical applications, the combination strategy of "laser scattering method for real-time monitoring and β - ray method for regular calibration" has become the mainstream solution for achieving both reliable and economical high-precision dust monitoring.
