It's easy to make mistakes based on intuition! The alarm of the oxygen detector is truly reliable!
Date: 2025-11-27Read: 1

In scenarios such as confined space operations, chemical maintenance, and underground mining, oxygen concentration is the "invisible lifeline" - oxygen deficiency can make people dizzy and suffocate, while oxygen enrichment may cause fires and explosions. However, many people still rely on "feeling" to judge whether oxygen is safe: "If you don't feel stuffy, you have enough oxygen" or "doing this before is okay"... These empirical judgments are precisely the "driving force" of safety accidents, and the alarm function of oxygen detectors is the "reliable defense line" that can truly safeguard safety. Let's explore in detail with the editor of Yiyuntian below.

1、 How dangerous is it to judge oxygen based on "feeling"?

The human body's perception of oxygen concentration is extremely slow, often waiting until obvious discomfort occurs and danger has already arrived:

Difficulty in detecting hypoxia: When the oxygen concentration drops from 21% (normal air) to 19.5% (the critical value of hypoxia), people hardly feel it; Dizziness and fatigue only occur when it drops to 16%, but if it is in a confined space at this time, consciousness may quickly blur and there may be no time to evacuate;

Oxygen enrichment without perception: In an environment with oxygen enrichment (concentration>23.5%), the human body does not experience any discomfort, but at this time, the ignition temperature of combustibles (such as fabrics and oils) will significantly decrease, and a spark may trigger intense combustion. When the fire is discovered, it is too late to control it;

Experience can deceive people: Some people think that 'there was no accident when I entered this tank last time' and 'this tunnel has always been well ventilated', but they ignore that sudden situations such as equipment leaks and ventilation failures can instantly change oxygen concentration. Judging from experience is essentially 'gambling on safety and luck'.

In a confined space accident, the operator failed to measure the oxygen level simply by saying "I didn't feel stuffy after entering for a while". As a result, the oxygen concentration in the tank was only 12%, and they lost consciousness within 3 minutes of entering, ultimately leading to a tragedy. Such an accident could have been prevented in advance by the alarm of the oxygen detector.

2、 What is the reliability of the "alarm" of the oxygen detector?

The alarm function of the oxygen detector is not a "simple reminder", but a "safety warning" based on precise monitoring. Its core advantages are reflected in three points:

Accurately identify critical values without overlooking risks

The measurement accuracy of a high-quality oxygen detector can reach ± 0.5% Vol, which can capture real-time changes in oxygen concentration: when the concentration is below 19.5% (oxygen deficiency) or above 23.5% (oxygen enrichment), an alarm is immediately triggered, 10-20 minutes earlier than human perception, giving sufficient time for evacuation and disposal. Even if the concentration slowly decreases (such as oxygen consumption by personnel breathing in a confined space), it can be accurately captured and will not be missed due to slow changes.

Multi form alarm, detectable even in harsh environments

In response to the complexity of industrial scenarios, oxygen detectors are usually equipped with triple alarms of "sound and light+vibration": sound level ≥ 90dB (audible even in noisy workshops), red flashing lights (visible in dim environments), and body vibration (perceived by touch when the noise is too loud), to avoid being ignored due to a single alarm form. For example, when working underground, the roar of the machine can mask the sound, and the vibration alarm can promptly alert personnel.

Fault self diagnosis, alarm does not 'misjudge'

A reliable oxygen detector also comes with a fault self diagnosis function: if the sensor fails, the battery is low, or the gas path is blocked, it will trigger a separate "fault alarm" to distinguish it from the "oxygen concentration alarm", avoiding "false alarms that make people relax their vigilance" or "missed reports that delay the timing". For example, if the aging of sensors leads to inaccurate data, the device will prompt for replacement in advance to ensure that every alarm is a "real risk".

3、 Don't rely on your feelings anymore for these scenes! Oxygen detector must 'alarm first before operation'

Limited space (storage tanks, underground pipelines, sewage wells): The space is sealed, and oxygen is easily consumed or replaced. The detector must be turned on first to confirm that there are no alarms before entering;

Chemical maintenance (reaction kettle, closed workshop): Oxygen deficiency may occur due to inert gas replacement, or oxygen enrichment may be caused by material leakage. The detector alarm is "entry permit";

Underground/tunnel construction in mines: Poor ventilation conditions may result in harmful gases squeezing oxygen after blasting. The detector needs to be turned on throughout the entire process and evacuate immediately upon alarm.

In short, don't let the wrong "feeling" push you into the abyss of danger anymore. Hurry up and equip your work environment with reliable oxygen detectors, making accurate alarm sounds your safety guard. Life only comes once, safety cannot be ignored. Don't wait for accidents to remind you of the importance of oxygen detectors. From now on, use scientific testing to safeguard life!
