Calibration and maintenance of handheld gas detectors: ensuring detection accuracy
Date: 2025-08-13Read: 1

Handheld gas detectors are widely used in industries, environmental monitoring, laboratory research, and other fields. They can monitor harmful gases in the air in real time, ensuring the safety of workers and the environment. Regular calibration and maintenance are necessary to ensure the accuracy of the test results.

1、 Function and Importance
Handheld gas detectors can be used to detect various gases, including but not limited to oxygen, flammable gases, toxic gases, etc. Its application scope includes multiple industries such as petrochemicals, electricity, construction, and mining, especially in high-risk environments where the safety of workers' lives is crucial. Due to the high requirement for detection accuracy of the detector, regular calibration and maintenance are particularly important.
2、 Calibration
Calibration of gas detectors is an important step in ensuring their measurement accuracy. Calibration is usually carried out under a known concentration of standard gas, with the aim of matching the instrument reading with the concentration of the standard gas. The calibration of gas detectors generally includes the following steps:
1. Choose the appropriate standard gas
Before calibration, it is necessary to select a standard gas that matches the detection object. The concentration of standard gas must be precisely known and must be within the range of the instrument.
2. Prepare instruments and connect standard gases
Connect the standard gas cylinder to the gas input port of the detection instrument, ensuring that the connection is well sealed and leak free.
3. Start the instrument and wait for stability
After starting the instrument, wait for it to run stably, which usually takes a few minutes. At this point, the initial reading of the instrument can be checked to ensure that it is in normal condition.
4. Adjust the instrument reading
Adjust the instrument reading to match the concentration of the standard gas based on its concentration. If the instrument reading deviation is significant, calibration is required.
5. Complete calibration and record data
After calibration is completed, record the instrument readings and calibration results. It is recommended to archive the data after each calibration to ensure future verification and tracking.
Calibration cycle: Generally speaking, the calibration cycle of gas detectors should be adjusted according to the frequency of use and environmental factors. Normally, equipment needs to be calibrated every 6 months or 1 year, but in high-risk or heavily polluted environments, more frequent calibration may be required.
3、 Maintenance
In addition to regular calibration, its daily maintenance is equally important. Good maintenance can not only extend the service life of equipment, but also maintain its detection accuracy. The following are several key steps in maintaining gas detectors:
1. Regularly check the sensor
The core component is the sensor, and its performance directly determines the accuracy of the detector. Sensors may experience degradation during long-term use, therefore regular inspections are necessary. If the sensor response is slow or malfunctioning, it should be replaced in a timely manner.
2. Cleaning and maintenance
Impurities such as dust and oil in the usage environment may adhere to the casing and sensor surface of the gas detector, affecting detection accuracy. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly clean the instrument, especially the sensor part. Use a soft dry cloth or specialized cleaning agent to wipe, and it is not recommended to use highly irritating chemicals.
3. Check the battery and power supply
Handheld gas detectors typically rely on battery power, so checking the battery level is crucial. Insufficient battery power may cause the instrument to malfunction or reduce detection accuracy. It is recommended to regularly check the battery level and replace or charge the battery in a timely manner.
4. Verify the alarm function
Many gas detectors are equipped with alarm functions, which can sound an alarm when harmful gas concentrations exceed the standard. Regularly test the alarm system to ensure it can issue accurate warnings at critical moments and ensure safety.
5. Check the gas flow system
Its gas flow system (such as pumping system) needs to be regularly inspected to ensure normal gas flow. If the gas flow rate is insufficient, it may cause the instrument to fail to collect samples in a timely manner, affecting the detection results.
