Digital multimeter usage tips: full analysis of correct operation and precautions
Date: 2025-12-11Read: 24

A digital multimeter is a universal tool in the field of electronic measurement, and correct operation is not only related to the accuracy of measurement results, but also to the safety of personnel and equipment. Mastering the following core skills and standards is the foundation of professional work.

1、 Key preparations before operation
Identify gear and socket: Clearly distinguish voltage (V~/-), current (A/mA/μ A), resistance (Ω), diode/on/off gear, etc. Be sure to insert the red probe into the corresponding dedicated socket for measurement (such as the V Ω hole for voltage measurement and the 10A or 20A hole for high current measurement), and always insert the black probe into the COM hole.
Estimation and selection: It is necessary to estimate the approximate range of the measured parameters before measurement. If it cannot be determined, the principle of "starting from the maximum range" should be followed. For example, when measuring voltage, select a high gear first, and then gradually lower it to the best resolution gear to avoid overloading and damaging the instrument.
2、 Safety regulations and measurement techniques
safety first:
Voltage measurement: Develop the habit of one handed operation to avoid electric shock caused by the formation of a circuit with both hands. Connect the probe first, then power on to measure.
Current measurement: The multimeter must be connected in series to the circuit, and parallel connection (equivalent to short circuit) is strictly prohibited. After the measurement is completed, the circuit should be disconnected first, and then the probe should be removed.
Resistance/on-off measurement: It is necessary to ensure that the tested circuit is powered off and the capacitor has been discharged, otherwise it will damage the instrument.
Accurate measurement techniques:
Eliminate zero drift: Short circuit the probe in resistance mode, record the base value, and subtract it from the final reading.
Correct reading: Wait for the display screen value to stabilize, paying attention to the decimal point and units. When communicating measurements, pay attention to the frequency response range of the instrument.
Utilizing additional features such as buzzer prompts for on/off mode, voltage drop testing for diode mode, and HOLD function are all powerful tools for improving efficiency.
3、 Core precautions
Prohibit excessive use: never use resistance or current settings to measure voltage.
Regular calibration and maintenance: Replace the battery regularly and check if the insulation of the probe is intact. In situations where high precision is required, instruments need to be calibrated regularly.
Limitations of understanding: Digital multimeters may have errors when measuring high-frequency signals, small currents, or non sinusoidal waves, requiring the use of more specialized instruments.
Following the golden rule of "selecting the right gear, safe operation, and standardized measurement", you will be able to fully utilize the efficiency of the digital multimeter, ensuring that every measurement is safe, accurate, and efficient.
