Fully automated DNA testing, allowing evidence to speak out in 90 minutes
Date: 2018-12-10Read: 1

DNA can be called the contemporary "evidence", which plays an important role in identifying suspect and missing persons. Faster and more convenient testing can save valuable time for the trial of cases. Thermo Fisher Applied Biosystems ™ RapidHIT ™ The ID rapid DNA detection system can automatically generate forensic DNA analysis results comparable to laboratory quality from a single source of samples almost anywhere, and the entire workflow only takes 90 minutes.

Thermo Fisher Rapid HIT ID rapid DNA testing process takes only 90 minutes

After more than 20 years of development, forensic DNA testing technology has been widely used in practical applications such as case investigation, missing persons investigation, and identification of disaster victims.

The applications of forensic individual identification, paternity testing, and genotype analysis mainly use the method of analyzing short tandem repeat (STR) sequences of DNA for typing. STR is a repeated base sequence on DNA, with varying numbers of repeats between individuals. We refer to this difference in repeat count as STR polymorphism and use it to identify different individuals.

STR polymorphism is used to identify different individuals

In individual recognition applications, the diversity and complexity of sample types are limiting factors that forensic scientists are constantly trying to overcome, such as optimizing DNA extraction methods to discover new STR loci and new single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for detecting trace amounts of DNA samples and degraded samples.

In recent years, scientists have paid great attention to optimizing the detection time and work efficiency of short tandem repeat (STR) typing. Conventional forensic STR typing typically involves steps such as DNA extraction, quantification, amplification, purification, fragment separation, and detection. The entire process usually takes eight to ten hours, which is difficult to meet the rapid comparison needs of on-site and personnel samples in disasters, crime scenes, and criminal cases. Scientists have shortened the entire DNA typing time by optimizing the relevant operational processes, but still cannot fundamentally reduce the detection time. This requires a fully automated equipment that can integrate DNA extraction, amplification, and electrophoresis to help achieve rapid detection of STR typing.

2017

The United States has introduced the "Rapid DNA Testing Act HR510" to accelerate the use of rapid DNA analysis technology by law enforcement agencies, and the implementation of this bill has opened up a new stage of rapid DNA testing technology.

The rapid DNA testing system has achieved rapid detection of STR typing, enabling DNA testing to go beyond forensic laboratories and be put into use in criminal scenes, disaster and epidemic scenes, grassroots police stations, border ports and other places, helping to quickly identify suspects or identify disaster victims.

2016

In the 2016 "Ghost Ship" warehouse fire in Oakland, USA, 36 people were killed. The local police analyzed the DNA of oral and body tissue swabs collected from yitie using the RapidHIT rapid DNA testing system, and compared them with their toothbrushes or family members' oral swabs. Through this method, the identities of all victims were identified, helping relatives and friends who were anxiously waiting at the scene to receive final confirmation information in a timely manner.

2015

A zisha style kongbu explosion occurred outside the Four Faced Buddha Temple in Bangkok, Thailand. In the investigation, the RapidHIT rapid DNA testing system helped the police quickly identify suspects. The explosion resulted in at least 22 deaths, and the scene was extremely chaotic with a large amount of blood and limbs scattered. Using the RapidHIT system, the police conducted DNA testing on these on-site samples and compared them with the DNA profiles of the Zisha style explosion suspect and their family members, thus identifying new suspects.

2014

A shooting occurred in Richland County, Washington, and the police submitted a blood sample taken from the suspect's clothing to a forensic laboratory for testing. Using the RapidHIT system, analysts quickly tested and compared the on-site samples with the victim's DNA samples, and within a few hours of sending them for testing, the suspect's identity was determined.

Applied Biosystems ™ RapidHIT ™ The ID rapid DNA detection system has a compact appearance and is easy to operate

The RapidHIT rapid DNA detection system used in the identification, testing, and criminal investigation of victims in these disasters is an Applied Biosystems developed and manufactured by Thermo Fisher Scientific using microfluidic chip technology ™ RapidHIT ™ The ID rapid DNA detection system is compact in size, easy to operate, and the entire detection process takes less than two hours to quickly obtain results

The entire process is automated, with manual operation in one minute and results obtained in less than two hours: integrating DNA extraction, amplification, electrophoresis, and data analysis functions into one device for automatic completion; The integrated sample card holder is plug and play, allowing operators to operate independently even without a background in forensic DNA.

• Quickly collect DNA information anytime, anywhere: Complete the collection of STR profiles at any location, such as border checkpoints, Fankong security checks, Gongan bureaus, and Paichusuo, and use them as contingency plans for urgent laboratory cases.

Equipped with the big data sharing system RapidLINK: supports connecting multiple sequencing machines of different models, enabling remote control of instruments and remote auditing and comparison of data, as well as networking with DNA databases.
