Analysis of Differences in Testing Standards for Melt Flow Rate and Guidelines for Instrument Selection
Date: 2025-12-05Read: 0
Melt flow rate (MFR/MVR) is a core indicator for evaluating the flowability of thermoplastic processing, but the differences between different national standards often result in incomparable test results, affecting material evaluation and trade. Scientific understanding of standard differences is a prerequisite for correct selection and testing.
1、 Deep analysis of differences in core standards
The global mainstream standards mainly include ISO1133, ASTMD1238, and Chinese GB/T3682. The principles of the three are similar, but the differences in key details directly affect the results:
Weighing and measurement methods: ISO and GB/T prioritize the mass method (MFR, unit g/10min) and volume method (MVR, unit cm ³/10min), and emphasize the advantages of MVR in quality control; Although ASTM standards include both, the quality method is more traditional and mainstream in the North American market.
Mold size and temperature: Although the standard mold inner diameter is mostly 2.095mm, there are slight differences in the recommended testing temperature and load for different materials (such as commonly used 190 ℃/2.16kg, 230 ℃/3.8kg). The ASTM standard provides a more detailed material condition correspondence table, and selecting the wrong condition will result in biased results.
Cutting and timing methods: These are the main sources of manual operation errors. The ISO standard has a clear calculation formula for the automatic cutting time interval, and the fully automatic tester can eliminate human errors through infrared induction or timed automatic cutting, which is the key to obtaining high repeatability data.
2、 Guidelines for Instrument Science Selection and Decision making
Selection should not only focus on price, but should be based on testing requirements, standard compliance, and long-term efficiency:
Basic quality control and research and development: Choosing semi-automatic/quality method instruments can meet conventional MFR testing. It is necessary to confirm that the standard mouth mold, weight set, and temperature calibration certificate of the instrument are in compliance with the target standards (such as ISO or ASTM).
R&D and strict quality control: A fully automatic MVR tester must be selected. Its core advantage lies in: ① directly measuring density independent volume flow rate (MVR), resulting in more accurate results; ② Built in piston displacement sensor and automatic cutter, achieving unmanned testing and process traceability; ③ The software automatically calculates and outputs results that meet the requirements of data integrity.
Key performance indicator verification:
Temperature control accuracy: The uniformity of the temperature field in the material barrel should be ≤± 0.5 ℃.
Timing/displacement accuracy: The automatic cutting timing error should be less than 0.1 seconds, and the displacement sensor resolution should reach 0.01mm.
Compliance and Scalability: Does the instrument software come pre installed with mainstream standard testing methods and support user-defined conditions? Do you have networking and data audit tracking capabilities to meet GLP/GMP requirements?
Conclusion: The essence of choosing a melting finger analyzer is to select a standardized and traceable measurement capability. For modern laboratories that pursue efficiency and precision, fully automated instruments that support MVR testing have become essential. They not only seamlessly integrate with mainstream standards, but also improve data quality from the source, providing solid support for process optimization and quality control.
